We are moving there in one week. My DH got a job and his father is sick. We are now in Montana and I think the cost of living is waaaaay out of hand here, and I just read a post on another thread saying it was bad in Wilmington. Is it AP friendly at all, if not how close is the closest AP place? (I feel like I'm talking about a grocery store, "AP" .) I love MT sooooo much it's hard to leave, but I feel we are doing the right thing, but tell me something good about Wilmington, PLEASE!

Wow, from MT to Wilmington NC, that's quite a change! I'm in Chapel Hill NC and have only visited Wilmington/vicinity a few times. If you like the beach and ocean and parks, there is plenty of that. Wilmington has a nice downtown historic district - we stayed at a B&B there a few years ago and had a nice time, walked around town, ate some good food, and saw an Irish music concert. In my limited experience it seems like it would be a nice place to live. You're not too terribly far from the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area and I know there are lots of AP folks here, and I've seen posts here (at MDC) as well looking for other AP mamas in eastern NC so you most certainly won't be alone. I dont have much else to offer since I'm just not very familiar with the area, but it sounds like you're a bit nervous about moving out there and I wanted to offer a warm welcome to you! I am from the Midwest and moving to the east coast was a bit of a shock at first (I *loved* the place I moved from and was not too thrilled with the place I moved to) but now I love it here and just a few years ago dh and I were moving again and decided to stay here rather than head back to the Midwest.

i bumped a few old posts for you. i think it's a nice city and the beach is nice, but i don't think it has a particularly AP/crunchy rep. i think you can find what you need, though. there are a few moms who post here that are from the area.

hth and hope your move goes well...

Thanks for replying. I am very nervous. I am not terribly crunchy, but I am a granola in training. Kid #2 and still learning. AP just seemed to go hand in hand with what my gut was telling me all along. But boy is there a lot to learn. I feel it will be a life adventure. I'm just afraid of the unknown. I'm sure it will be OK, but for some reason I fear judgement and unwanted oppinions. Maybe I'm more afraid of my inlaws than anyone else . Thanks for bumping those threads. I did a search, I just suck at searches. I put in one thing and something completely different comes up. I'll take a look at them.

Hey there,

I live in Wilmington, NC. It's not as crunchy as the mountain part of our state, but it's got some granola in it. I belong to a local moms group and there are several moms that practice AP. Let me know if you want me to email you a link or whatnot.

There is a lovely little co-op grocery called Tidal Creek:
Tidal Creek Cooperative market, which I'd guess is also a great way to connect with the alternative community there.

Also, I've heard that there is a GREAT La Leche League group there, very active with lots of long-time leaders. They have five meetings a month, which is pretty amazing for a relatively small community:
La Leche League of Wilmington

Good luck! I live in Durham but sometimes have romantic notions of life on the beach....we have spent quite a bit of time in the Wilmington are on vacation and love it!
