Okay all of my parenting decisions have had a simple answer, and I've always just know what was right for us...
but this decision is awful for me cause none of the options seem right...
The following thread the back ground....
background

Here are the options....
1. pull front 4 will local anasthetic, and fix others while in there..----teeth shouldn't decay anymore, but this requires him to be awake and no pain relief afterwards
2. leave front 4, and fix others..---won't be as tramatic and painful, but will still be held down for the treatment of other teeth... the top 4 will likely get infected and he'll end up on antibiotics over and over, until he's 2...
3. leave them all alone, until he's old enough for GA (1 year from now)..---If we wait a year to fix the ones that aren't nearly as bad, they ALL will need to be pulled ...

I voted for #3, what a tough decision mama!

I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once, I couldn't image no pain relief after. Even with the pain relief, I was still in pain. I could only image how much pain I would have been in without it.

I would do my best to find a way for him to have them all pulled now under GA. I'm sorry that I didn't read the other thread all the way through, so don't know if this is impossible for you. But babies can certainly have GA if needed, and it seems to me that it's more than needed in this case. My son had GA for an MRI at 9 months. It's not pleasant, but it can certainly be done safely.
If GA is impossible, could he have sedation?

And if all of this is not possible, I would vote for option 1. It really sounds like they need to be out, for his health and comfort.

They would sedate him with nitrus oxide, and use a shot to numb his gums...
Hes on FL medicaid and the nearest dentist accepting medicaid is 1.5 hours away, and I took a taxi 4 hours to see the second nearest dentist for a second opinion... And he also refused to do it under GA....

If you can't find anyone to do it under GA, then I would do it now under local. It sounds like an extremely serious medical condition, and just letting it go for a year doesn't seem wise.

Btw, I had an impacted wisdom tooth extracted under GA a few years ago, and all I used afterward was Tylenol. I know you said you don't give that to your kids but ... completely rotted teeth left alone for a year vs. a few doses of Tylenol?

Namaste!

Yes, I read the thread now, I'm sorry that this is so very frustrating. I'm just going to brainstorm, in hopes of coming up with something helpful:

1. Call all pediatric dentists in the surrounding area. If you find one who will do general but doesn't take medicaid, beg for payment arrangements.
2. Contact medicaid office and tell then that your son needs a service which no medicaid participating providers can provide, and ask for suggestions.
3. Schedule the extraction, arrive, and insist in an immovable way that you be allowed to accompany your son.
4. Move
5. Call all medicaid dentists in the state; if you find one that will extract under general, ask for transportation and lodging help here or in "finding your tribe" or on craigslist or through church or family.

It sucks that they won't use GA for him right now, but I think that leaving his teeth like this for another year will cause him more harm in the long term. Those teeth need to be fixed. Will the dentist 4 hours away at least let you stay with him during the dental work?

I am so sorry you have to deal with all of this!
Your poor little guy!

It sure sounds like those front teeth need to come out. I tried to read everything, but I might have missed: have you found someone who will allow you (or another support person) to stay with him? That's such a tough one. I hope it isn't too hard to get past that hurdle.

Here's some more info on homeopathic support- for stress, swelling, pain relief... in case there's something there you didn't already have:

We'll be thinking of you.

Find a way to have them taken care of under GA as soon as possible - the pediatric dentist we took our daughter to does not discuss payment until after the work has been completed - they feel that the important thing is to get these kids the help that they need! We are still making payments due to not having dental insurance but it was so worth every penny! My daughter had her teeth worked on when she was 3 - the nirtous mask scared her and the dentist agreed that it was not worth it to risk traumatizing her, so he used conscious sedation - some bubble gum medication that she drank and made her loopy and eventually she drifted off to sleep and had the work done while sitting in her daddy's lap. She has no recollection of the dental work and still likes the dentist! I had a horribly traumatic experience as a child and will never fully trust dentists again - I will do everything in my power to make sure that my daughters never have that fear!

Good luck Mama - I know what a heavy burden this must be on your heart right now. Keep looking for the right dentist - there has to be someone out there that will help you!

I voted other but I was leaning towards option #1. If he's in pain because of his teeth now and likely to be in pain until he can get GA, I would do it now and do as much as possible. Why won't he get pain medication afterwards? That doesn't seem right.

I'm agreeing with PPs that you should try to find a way to get GA. You might consider conscious sedation if you feel comfortable with that...it's slightly more risky IMO but it would cost a lot less. We just had dental work (8 crowns total, including the front teeth) done on DS under GA. The whole bill is going to be about $6K, and our insurance only covers $1K. It's a lot of money. I'd weigh how much trauma your child is going to go through vs what you can afford to pay off somehow. BTW, our son is 19 months old. So I don't know if the 2 yr mark is something that specific to the dentist you saw or a bigger rule (statewide?) there...but it isn't the case everywhere.
