Okay I am reading the HS threads. DS is 3.5 yo. He is already homelearning many things. I feel like I can think up new things to show him when I have some time to think. Does anybody to the occasional kid swap/ a day here or there so you have time to plan activities (like day trips, or artsy craftsy projects etc)?

Nope
I just do it when they have gone to bed, or think about it while I am driving, watching them at the park, waiting for them at lessons etc. It doesn't take much to plan a field trip generally esp by email.
I do try to get to the library once a week on my own, but dh is usually doing something w the kids then.
On Sunday nights I do a rough outline of the next 2 weeks and put down anything I need to pick up when we are out and about, or anything I need to copy etc so we can incorporate that into regular errands

Sorry - not much help
At the end of every "semester" per se, my friend and another homeschooling mom friend of hers get a hotel room in our city. They swim, go to the spa, and relax, and at night, they plan their curriculums for the next few months! She is amazing and gets a lot done.

If you can't do this, I would say trading off days with someone every now and then would be a great idea.

I don't do planning days, but we're unschoolers, so we're more unstructured in a way. I do often think of things that I think they might really like to learn about, or games or projects. I keep a notepad on the table beside my bed to write down ideas as I'm heading to bed...or if I wake up with one. I also have a 'to do' list of stuff in general, and sometimes I'll write something down on there that I want to do with them. I prepare any materials I need for games or whatever when I have a few minutes here and there.

On a slightly different note...I would LOVE to go to a hotel a couple of times a year. Perhaps I should tell DXH that it would be to our kids' advantage for me to start taking planning days
