So, happy early mothers day to all of you!

What are you doing for Mother's Day? I really need some ideas. I'm in NYC with no one but myself and my son to celebrate, since my family all lives really far away. They will be here soon for my law school graduation (I'm walking but I have one more semester), but not in time for mothers day.

Any ideas?? I was thinking about searching online for some events, but I don't know where to start (and I'm poor, so it would have to be free).

How old is your son? I think searching for a street festival or craft fair or something sounds nice.

My dd and I often go to Barnes and Noble or something like that, each pick a pile of books, and snuggle up, share a drink and read.

Come on up to the Bronx and meet me at the zoo. That's where I plan on going with DS!

we have a earth festival going on here that my dd and i usually go to every year. this year i am contemplating what to do. i have NO money except for food. yet it is teh only kind of event dd and i enjoy. once a year. the reason why i dont want to go is because there are a lot of vendors out there and its really hard for her not to get anything.

however mother's day is just a coincidence. i dont usually do anything on mothers day if that event wasnt happening i am not sure what we would do.

however the weather is just BEAUTIFUL out here.

so our spring madness is on (its kinda a restless feeling within both of us for which we need outdoors time, otherwise i get frustrated adn dd starts acting up). seriously our weekend now are usually really busy.

so here are my suggestions based on the fact that your son is about 1 1/2 years old:

a picnic
a hike
if you have the river maybe a picnic by the river
visit a nearby quaint little town adn walk around and visit their thrift store and treat both of you to something.

for events use the calendar in one of your local papers. check the radio station. there are stuff happening all over that weekend where i am. some of the parks have bulletin boards which post events too.

Really? Are you being serious? If you are we can totally meet up!! I'd have to take the bus though - how long does it take to get to the bronx zoo from queens on the 44?

DS is 16months. I was thinking about maybe going to the Central Park zoo since its small, the Bronx Zoo is so crowded it freaks me out sometimes - especially with a busy munchkin trying to escape all the time!

Someday we will meet up!! It would be so much fun to get our babies together since they are only a few days apart in age!

I love just hangin' with my kids and having a spontaneous kind of day. I always make sure I treat myself to something...a special meal, a fancy coffee, ice cream...whatever it is that appeals to me and I enjoy it fully!

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day is hard on me.

Ds is sick so we'll just be staying in and watching movies.

Thank you. As it turns out, my uncle's shindig won't be happening because he's out of town. So, maybe we'll get wild and hit a museum before my strawberries and drinks. But the sweetest thing happened yesterday. My dd made me a beeswax and lavendar candle at Waldorf school for Mother's Day. It just warms my . :

And today, at my library, I will be hosting my annual Mommy & Me Tea Party. We'll read stories, make the moms a gift and have tea and cookies. The fun just doesn't stop for me!!! Cookies, yummy! Now, I'm off to start making the tea!!!

When I didn't have much money we used to have pancakes with sugar on them together on Mother's Day and watch movies from the library. We also go on a picnic lunch and play for a long time at the park. This year we are going to a church brunch and out to eat with my family.

We're going to make sugar pancakes, then hang out all day at home.
It's raining cats and dogs here (and will be the same tomorrow) so I am looking forward to having a 'do-nothing' day.

For me, it's a great Mother's Day 'event'!!

Ooooh, I love the idea of chocolate covered strawberries, wine and a bath. I am totally stealing this for during DS's nap! I usually go out to brunch with just DS, but this year, he is so antsy that I think I am going to skip it. There is an ice cream stand that is giving away free sundaes for all moms tomorrow, so we are definitely going to hit that up.

I am working in the morning, and after that, I might go to church, or I might take DS swimming, I think I will wait and see how things go.

I might also have to go buy us lobster for lunch. DS and I both LOVE it, and it will be a fun treat, but not as expensive as going out for lunch.

awwwwww that wounds like a nice plan. i am so tired from the mother's day tea party that i do at the library and i am starting to crash after all of the sugar i had with the families. now i'm kind of drowsy, but i am still excited about tomorrow. we have to get it in for ourselves, mamas! no one will ever be able to treat me as well as i do.

Ooooh, I wanted to share too about my first Mother's Day. I have shared this here on MDC before, so if you have read this, I apologize, but here goes:

On my first Mother's Day, DS was about six weeks old, and I was completely alone. I hadn't really made many mama friends yet, I don't really have any family in the area, and I have been single since I was 10 weeks pregnant. I was feeling very down on myself, so I decided to take DS and myself out for brunch. (well, he nursed anyway. )

I ordered the most decadent pancakes, fresh squeezed oj and the waitress brought me a flower too. There was a really sweet older couple a few tables over that kept making all sorts of cute faces at DS as he nursed and sat on my lap. I was sort of over in a corner in the back (by my request), so they were the only table that could see us. I even had the waitress take a picture of us.

When it came time to pay my bill, the waitress asked if she could get me anything else, and when I said I just wanted to pay the bill, she said, "Oh, no, it has already been taken care of for you! Happy Mother's Day!!" I asked if it was the sweet couple that had been flirting with DS, and she said yes, but they didn't want me to know until after they had already left the restaurant. I literally sat back down and cried. I was soooooo poor, and this was such a treat for me. I felt so much gratitude, and *knew* that things were going to work out for us. I just had to reach out to people.

It can be tough to be a single mama on Mother's Day, especially when you have high exectations of what you think it should be all about, but if you hang in there and make things happen for yourself, it can be a million times better than you can ever imagine it being. I have never been happier than I am as a single mama, and I totally plan to revel in it tomorrow!
