Mothers in Rhode Island

Hello,
I am just introducing myself. My husband and I have a 7 month baby boy. We currently live in West Warwick. Since we are new to the area we would like to know of any locations that are baby friendly (fun and educational) to visit or any other info as well. Also, if I can help in anyway let me know. You know, prior to moving to RI we were warned that this is a racist state, we are Indigenous people and have not encountered any blatant racism thus far, however, we are conscious of racial issues and just want to be at peace with all. It is difficult being the only people of color at times but hope to make our stay in RI as positive as we can...nice to meet you and hope to make many great friends. Our baby boy's name is Axayacatl.
love,
yao

Hi Yao and welcome to mothering and RI.
I've lived here all my life :) We have 2 children, 13 yr son and 4 yr daughter. We live in Smithfield, north of you.

There's lots to do with a babe in RI and there's lots of mom things too.
There are mom's clubs for almost every town, I love mine, but it's very mainstream. There's AP and LLL meetings too.
I'm going away this coming week for a week, but feel free to pm or email me ;-)

If you would please forgive me for being ignorant, Indigenous from where? From Africa or Australia? or am I just totally off.

anyhoo, I'm sure in time you will settle in and have lots of friends ;-)
Welcome Yao. I"m right around the corner from you in Warwick. I like across the street from the RI mall actually, off East Ave. I have a nearly 7 year old, a 2 1/2 year old and am expecting our third baby next year. It's actually not so bad here in RI. We love the children's museum in Providence and the zoo in Providence and Bellani Maternity here in Warwick. Bellani is right across from Target on Rt. 2. I HIGHLY recommend you go. Kelly and Shannon are the owners and they are SOOOO nice and the place is just what a Mothering mom loves!!! Everything from nursing and maternity clothing to pumps and bf'ing supplies to a few cloth diapers and slings and wraps. Lots of wooden toys and robeez. I LOVE that place. On Wednesdays at 11am we do a playgroup and there are tons of breastfeeding, cloth diapering moms there. Lots of fun. You should definitely come!

Ooooh just adding. Schartner Farms off Rt. 102 does strawberry picking this time of year. Your son might be a bit young for that but you'd have a great time and I'm sure he'd love to be outside and would enjoy the atmosphere. I"m taking my girls next weekend!

I was just thinking about this and wanted to comment. I don't think RI is a "racist" state per se. Definitely one of the more mainstream states out there being that bf'ing and cd'ing and the whole natural family living way of life isn't really "done" here but I don't see us as being racist. I grew up here and both hubby and I moved away and lived in a lot of different places over the years but we came back a year ago. I definitely have been in way more racist areas, like the south. You want to see racist??? WOAH! But, pleasantly enough, I think that most RI'ers really seem pretty tolerant of each other. I hope you find that to be the case too.

Hi Yao...
I think that nearly anywhere we look we can find closed-minded people unfortunatly. Rhode Island was founded as the first place to allow freedom of religion. Therefore, historically, people congregated here of all different faiths and ethnicities. With your positive attitude I think you will continue to attract like-minded, kind people.
We are pregnant with our first child, who is due be joining us in AUgust.

As for child-friendly events and the like....Bellini is wonderful I heard. There is a Montesouri in both Newport and in Providence..They have classes for mothers and children even at your son's age. But, I believe they are a tad expensive.

Other than that we have some nice family-friendly music festivals in Newport, as well as a reggae fest...in Charlestown.

I hope you contnue to find that the goodness you manifest with in truly surrounds you and your family throughout.
