We're moving from Austin to Houston for my husband's new job, and I am hoping for recommendations for various healthcare providers and a real estate agent. I tried searching, but there seem to be a lot of area names in Houston and I'm not familiar enough with the city to figure it out. Can anyone help?

I think we're going to be in the area south of the Westpark Tollway, outside the beltway, and north of 59... sorta Sugar Land, or the area nearer Houston. Of course I'll drive outside this area, this was just to describe it as best I could.

-holistic dentist (i need my amalgams replaced with composites pretty soon after we relocate)
-vet (dog is on a strange dosage of thyroid med, so being able to really talk with the doctor is important)
-chiropractor (general stuff, someone who's good with kids, too, ages 1 and 4, if we need to visit)
-doctor (we've got a family practice doc now, I want someone who is fine with me making vax choices and doesn't hassle me if I only show up when the kids are really sick)
-real estate agent (I clearly don't know the city, and my husband's new job is starting Jan14, so we need help getting settled)

Also, what types of yahoo groups exist?

I feel like I've just figured out most of this here, and now it's time for us to start over in a new city. Any other good advice? On any topic? TIA.

Not much help on the professionals. There is an active API group and a babywearing group and several AP play groups.

www.har.com All the MLS listings in Houston available here. Is your DH's new company giving him a relocation package? If so, I would use it. They may assign you a realtor based on which part of the city you want to live in, which IMO is ideal. You need someone who really really knows the area inside and out; probably someone who lives in that area and can meet you there quickly because traffic can be a real problem.

I would recommend getting the address of your hubby's new workplace and then setting up sort of a radius search; say, within 20 minutes' drive time (or however far he's willing to commute). Don't just base it on mileage, go for drive time. www.traffic.houstontranstar.org. Real-time traffic conditions and live feed from freeway cameras on this site.

Like a pp said, there is an active API group and they can give you referrals for various professionals once you figure out what part of the city you'll be living in.

One last bit of advice: take your time getting to know the city/suburb before committing to a long-term lease or mortgage. We have relocated several times and it really pays to do your research. Don't just settle for the first available in order to meet the Jan. 14th deadline. On the other hand, may you find your perfect home ASAP!

Good luck with the move!

I love my realtor, and he really knows the area you're talking about. He knows the schools, really listens to what YOU want and doesn't drive you around for days showing you crap his friends want to unload. He also doesn't automatically add 25% to your maximum mortgage and then try to "yupgrade" you into a mortgage you can't afford.

His name is Michael Magania, and he's at (713) 502-8855.

We really like our pediatrician, Dr. Alex Injac. (Search mothering.com boards for more info.) He's at 4101 Greenbriar Suite 100 Houston, Tx 77098 - (713) 526-6443. It looks to me like lots of pediatricians have been told on the advice of counsel to no longer advice parents about vaccinations - he sure doesn't say a thing about them one way or another. Also he "gets" AP and really, really enjoys his job and kids.

I'm actually hoping someone will offer up a chiropractor, I need one today!

Angela--Thanks, I'll try to find the yahoo groups and see about joining. I need to figure out how to make friends outside of work, now that I'm no longer employed.

Mom2annika--the area I described is where my husband's job is, and where we would like to live for exactly the reasons you discussed. My husband hates (passionately hates) long commutes, and the traffic was one of our reasons for hesitating about the job. But we drove down to Houston for a day a few weeks ago and drove up and down residential streets and saw some that looked quite nice, as well as close to his new work.

His company can help some with relocation expenses, but they don't do anything like help with finding a realtor or movers or anything like that (it's a really small company, one of the pluses for my husband). We're on our own there.

I'll take a look at the drive time site you listed--that may expand our search radius, we looked close by, found a couple neighborhoods that looked nice, and then quit, but that's not the most logical way to go about it, I realize.

Frannyo-thank you for the name of your ped and the realtor. I've seen the name of your doc before but I don't remember much, so I'll search to read for more (nice that he has a distinctive name ). I have just been assuming we'd find another family practice doctor, but really I think it'll come down to which doctor(s) seem a good fit and reasonable in terms of distance (and I just hope the insurance with the new company is reasonable as well).

Thanks everyone.

Chiros:

Dr Elliot, she's in Katy and is awesome! She's certified in prenatal as well and did an incredible adjustment during my last week of pregnancy. She says she adjusts babies and children, but I haven't brought ds out there yet. Very reasonable too.
http://www.efchiro.com/

Dr Mack, near 610 and post oak. Very good, open Saturdays and gives a really long, nice massage before adjusting you.713-627-7223 Don't know about children.

Dr Brett Franson, Westheimer near Wilcrest. Adjusted ds (3.5 months). No frills, but a good adjustment and reasonable.281-701-1596

Dr Carlos Domino on Long Point in Spring Branch. He's an all around great guy and gives a great adjustment..will apply heat/massage if needed. Ballroom dancer, track coach, abd veteran, he's quite knowledgeable.713-468-3555 I know he adjusts babies, I do love seeing him...its been too long.

Hi! I live in Sugar Land, so quite near where you're looking. My church is in Stafford, which is just "up" the freeway from Sugar Land, so I'm pretty familiar with that area, too, particularly the side west of 59. (Some areas of Stafford are best avoided, but those would be pretty obvious when driving around - and are further from where you are talking about.) If you look for housing in Sugar Land, Stafford, or Meadows Place, those are the closest and the least drive time. Unfortunately, Houston Transtar doesn't extend out this far, so you may not get a lot of info from them. Okay, I take that back - looks like it covers 59 as far as Williams Trace!

I have a great pediatrician here in Sugar Land - Dr. Cassandra Dickerson, http://www.dickersonpediatrics.com/. I've posted about her before so you may want to search for her name. She's definitely non-vax friendly - never, ever pushes them on us. Ever. We've worked with her and her nurse (who moved with her from her old office) for 5 years now, and really like them.

I also see Dr. Elliott and have widely recommended her. She practices out of her home and has fairly limited hours with two little ones herself, but that's not generally a problem. She's moving soon (or maybe just did), and would be a bit closer to this side of town than she had been. She's worked with my younger two from birth, as well as my oldest son.

In addition to the API group, there is a great babywearing group on Yahoo, and we have monthly babywearing meetings in Sugar Land, too. There's a not-very-active cloth diapering group, active ICAN group, and... um... I guess that's all of the local ones I frequent.

Oh, and just so you know, a brand new Whole Foods *just* opened here in Sugar Land - Hwy 6 and 59. Yeah, we're a little excited out here - no more driving 20 minutes into town for a good grocery!

If I can help at all, please let me know! Feel free to PM if there are specific questions I can help with with in this area. Let us know when you get here!

I don't think that word has gotten around yet.

:

So um do you have anything specific about that?

ETA: btw, my laughter is not intended at you. It's about my own ridiculous, near farcical experience with doctors in this town.

Mamaverdi, I know what you mean. Yes, actually I do have something specific but I'm not sure this is the forum to discuss it, and I'm sure it depends on the practice, how active/cautious their staff counsel is, and how concerned the doctor's malpractice insurance carrier is about it. (Very recent development by the way, not something you would have been likely to see before the federal hearings last summer.)
