We might be possibly be moving to South Bend/Mishawaka area in the next few months. Can anyone let me know what areas are good, how the schools compare with eachother (do schools offer full day of kindergarten), APing families, open-mindedness, crime rate, things of that nature. As so how Indiana handles non-vaxing fro schooi enrollment. As so if anyone belongs to MOPS that would be helpful as I will be looking for a new group.

I don't have a lot of info on SB area schools etc, but can answer the vax question. Indiana does not have a philisophical exemption, but does have a religious one. So far (second year doing this), we have had no problems with submitting a yearly religious waiver to the school. We've had no questions asked.
Open-mindedness is spotty. There are a lot of very conservative families around these parts, but SB might be slightly better than Goshen (where I live).

Thank you so much for the link to Holistic Moms! We don't have a chapter in MI., but if all goes the way it seems, at least I'll have a place (I hope) with like minded families.
Moving is never fun, but knowing I won't be the only "hippy" helps.

Hi!
I live in South Bend.
We do have HMN (I'm a member, lol!) which is nice, lots of activities.

One of the great things about good ole backward IN is that it is definitely a parents rights state.
Religious exemption is absolute on vax, no problems at all there.
Crime rate is yuck, we just had another police officer killed....but the key is to live in a "good" part of town.

We have homebirth and hosp midwives, so thats cool.....
There is a local alternative medicine doc (MD)who is also non-vax supportive....and vegan. There are chiros and stuff too....

The general mainstream community is YUCK......

there are lots of local health food resources, plenty of organic choices, even in the regular stores, and a big local farmers market to get fresh stuff.....the HFS have pretty much ANY herbal, homeo, natural remedy you can think of....which is nice

The state is GREAT for homeschooling, no regulations at all...
PS here suck, but that's my opinion...there really are quite crappy, and you will want to pay attention BIG TIME to where you are getting a house if you are doing PS, because they bus kids to ensure a "mixture"...so getting a house in a great neighborhood doesn't mean your kid goes to the nice school down the block...they might be bussed into the ghetto.....South bend is considered the worst, with mishawaka being better, and Penn being the best...but frankly, my stepsons are in Penn and they're awful. But then again....I'm really anti-PS. there ARE a couple of decent montessori schools, and a reggio......but they are mega$$$$$$.....also, the town is of course, SERIOUSLY Catholic and there are tons of Catholic schools....and obviously other private schools as well, Baptist, etc...I honestly don't know a whole lot about them.
Last time i checked, there was NOT universal full day kindy here, only for a select number of schools and students (mainly high-risk)but they are supposed to be phasing it in....
there are LLL groups and MDO programs...I think there is a mops program also, but im not sure...

Okay, must go....
