We might be moving to San Antonio by June (90% chance). We live in Washington State, I am sure things will be very different. We have no idea where to live or where to even look. We will have two in high school and two in elementary school. We will probably rent the first year. I am not sure I want to live in the “city”. I would like to look at the outlaying area. Dh will be working near the air force base and we would like about a 30 minutes commute or less. Any suggestions?

We lived in La Vernia, just east of San Antonio. It is a small town and a small to medium size school district. Great school and community. I can't say for sure how long the commute would be. If you wanted to be in the city I suggest Converse Judson area. I don't know much about the schools except that they have a great football team from hearing the news and such. Feel free to PM me if you would like more information about La Verina.

The AFB is on the south west side of the city. Look for housing outside of 410 or even 1604. There is a lot of growth right now on this side of town, I think you will be able to find what you are looking for easily. My girls are too young for school so I'm not much help there, but you definetley have lots of choices, there are many charter schools to choose from, and of course the public schools as well. Good Luck.

thanks for you help. this has been a tad bit overwhelming. This is going to be a totally new experience for us living this far south. Now to ponder charter schools v. public schools.

Which Air Force Base? If you mean Lackland, you'll want to live to the north. That side of town is pretty rough (I used to live there). If it's Randolph/Brooks, the PP is right--Converse will be your best bet. That or New Braunsfels (which is pretty nice).

Lackland...but we only need to be within 45 minutes of it so its not like we are tied to a couple miles of where dh would be working.

I don't know much about the Lackland area, but I do know that we can get most places in San Antonio (even across the city) in 45 minutes. This is not during rush hour, but this is not Dallas or Houston so rush hour does not mean adding HOURS to your drive, but maybe 15-20 minutes. This is my experience, anyway! There are a lot of nice, family "pockets" throughout San Antonio. I would suggest telling a realtor what you are looking for and seeing what they say. (I can give you the name of the realtor we used, if you need a referral.) I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the low cost of living in San Antonio. You can find good housing for a good cost.

Schools is a much tougher situation. There are some wonderful schools here, but you really almost have to visit them to get a feel of the atmosphere. You can look on the Texas Education Agency's website to find out basic info about how schools "perform," but this is ONLY BASIC and the school climate itself is soooooo much more important!!

Good luck. I love it here, but I also love warm weather (would THRIVE on the equator!!), so am a bit biased. Our AP group is very welcoming if you are interested!

OK this post was so weird. I haven't posted here in a long time and I wondered if my name was mum4boys! Why? Because we just moved to San Antonio from Washington last summer! I totally thought it was a post I made! LOL
ANYWAY....we are military and live in base housing not on base. We live on the south side and it is pretty bad. I suggest you stay far away from it!
The west side is good, and I understand they have a good school system (we homeschool so I'm not 100% sure about schools). I hear that around the Sea World area is nice. And it looks great. We also attend church in Converse and that is a nice area as well. I would live there, if we didn't live here. It takes us about 20 minutes to get there from our place, it's a pretty straight shot.
I'm excited to see some San Antonio folks. I haven't been able to find anyone like me around here! Everyone I know thinks I have 3 heads!
Keep us posted. What part of Washington are you in?

I live near New Guilbeau and 1604. It's a great community that I live in! Not too far from Lackland and not too close!! Northwest side is booming.

Hi! I just thought I'd give a different perspective on the south side. I live in a small town called Lytle southwest of SA. There's a lot of growth going on here right now. The schools are nice and small, which I like alot, and actually one of the reasons we decided to buy a house here. There aren't as many "opportunities" as there are in larger schools, but I've been really impressed with the caring teachers my son has had so far. Its quiet and peaceful, and the commute would be easy!

Hi Ladies.

I live in San Antonio in the Medical Center.

We are actually going to be moving to the Southside next year aince my DH works for Toyota now. We want ot live in a friendlier , less materialistic area then we are in right now.
the southside reminds of ofthe small town we come from.
Of course there are areas/neighborhoods to be avoided... alot of which seem to be on the west side, or Five Palms for instance.
but we are really looking forward to it!

i'm always looking for like-minded moms to GTG with - so everyone feel free to PM or e-mail me if you want to playdate!
