Hey mamas!!

I recently found out that our family will be moving to Telluride for one year. We leave around June 1st and will be living near Mountain Village. Dp is in the hospitality industry and as a result we have lived all over, but never anywhere like Telluride! I am a sun worshiper and from south TX, the coldest place I have lived is New Hampshire (and I fled mid winter back to the PacNW! )...we are currently in S. New England now. I am also afraid of snow (seriously don't like it ) and am taking a positive route and looking towards Fall, Winter, and Spring as an adventure, once-in-a-lifetime kinda thing. Colorado will be the 6th state we have lived in and we've never lived away from the ocean. Kinda bummed about that.

It is all a surprise, really, as we were set to move back to Oregon the other day and now dp's job really needs him in Telluride, so off we go!

Now I'd loooove any info you can give me on what life is like in Telluride, SW CO, and Colorado as a whole. We are a homeschooling, vegetarian (not dp), cloth diaper, homebirthing, family due with our 6th child in October. I looked up the local midwife and would love any info or suggestions as well. Mountain Birth is the site I have seen, is she the only mw? We'd love info on the homeschooling scene in Telluride and the general laws and acceptance, or not, of homeschoolers across the state.

Also..what can you grow there? We are going to be pretty high up there and wonder what I can grow and where are the farms? Also, adjusting to the altitude is a huge concern for me since I'm pregnant and I worry for the kids as well. And..things to do for kids?? Where to shop for natty foods, how are the food prices, and is it that long of a ride into Montrose or Durango?

I am very worried I won't find m/any friends or like minds who homeschool and have children that are younger (ours are 8 and under). I hope to find other MDC mamas out there but searching on here didn't bring anything up. We have made wonderful friends all over w/ MDC mamas and hope to continue that. Just hoping there are mamas out there!

Thanks and I really look forward to learning all I can about Telluride and talking to others who have been there/live there and can help.

I'm over in Durango so I can only offer some advice about logistics of Telluride living. My parents do live near Telluride for half the week in the winter, we are an avid snow boarding family. Most of the locals that I know only shop in Telluride for small items, the only small market is quite pricey, they do a large shopping trip to Montrose or Cortez every couple weeks. I don't know about Montrose but organic foods are not in high demand in Cortez so the selection isn't great. Bulk food buying at the natural food shops in Durango every so often is another thing I hear about. Cheapest natural foods are going to be at Vitamin Cottage in Durango.

I know nothing about homeschoolers in Telluride, it is difficult enough to get people etogether in Durango, I don't know if telluride would be similar. Just from what I hear, telluride is very transient, families do not stay around long (the whole mountain lifestyle thing) so I could see groups having trouble like we do in Durango, but I don't know. I'd go the library and ask around once you get there. The library is great and in a small town they can point you to other homeschoolers. If you are not moving until June 1st, it is going to be rough growing anything unless it is indoors, the growing season is very short and then mountain soil but it often needs assisting to grow things.

Rebecca at Mountain Birth is awesome, I used her for my last pg. She is pg herself and due this summer, I don't know when she is returning back to work. There is a male MW out of Montrose, Bill Dwelley I think is his name, that I have always heard good things about but I have never meet him. If you email Rebecca, she can put you in contact with anyone else that is practicing over there. I kinda got the feeling that she was returning to births somewhat quickly after the baby but I could be mistaken, I haven't talked to her in a while.

We arrived last weekend and are loving this summer weather! Thanks for the info, Peony. I went to the library and got some info to connect w/ other hs'ers. The town itself is wonderful..like a dream! Reminds me of a mini Portland, OR.

Took a few days to adjust to the altitude, but everyone seems to be doing great now. Finally able to walk my pregnant self up the stairs and not need to rest and drink tons of water. Really loving the free gondola ride into town and the kids just think it's the coolest thing ever. It's pretty sweet!

Looking forward to the Bluegrass Festival next week and of course the ones happening this weekend. So, who's coming to Telluride to see Phish? I can't wait! Sold out fast, but just being out here while they play will be enough for me!
