How many days so far (this year) has your LO missed in school?
Was it for illness? Family events? etc..

I'm beginning to think my kids miss too much, but it's always something. Sickness, too cold to walk, family members sick preventing ME from walking them. I have no one to bring them as my SO works 6 am to 4 pm. For instance; last week our oldest was sick, but our youngest was okay, but still had to stay home as well... because I couldn't drag the sick kiddo out in crappy weather, and w/ a fever.

The school isn't concerned, but I am LOL

Maybe I'm too paranoid?

Our school has the "5 day rule" each quarter, so they really can't miss more than that without it affecting the grades. I'm kind of a stickler on attendance anyway, so my kiddos don't miss much unless we go out of town for some reason...I do think it's a bit more important when they are in middle and high school not to miss too much. But, my kids mostly like school, so they don't wanna miss...

11 days so far. Almost all for illness... a couple for leaving early for trips. She'll miss at least one more for a camping trip. It's private school. Do you mean "public" when you say "regular"? Our school has a policy, but it's an international school and many of the kids travel overseas for their trips home and the "policy" is basically ignored.

My ds has missed 19. He does have health issues and the school knows it. In fact he does this every year. Well one day he was kept out for his disabling anxiety. The school also sent him home a couple of days due to illness. He'sin a special day class so we don't really have grades to worry about.

My oldest hasn't missed any days, my younger son has missed 1, my preschooler has missed 1. The little ones get bundled up in the pushchair with blankets and a raincover on cold days and get taken in anyhow.

probably 14. maybe even 20.

majority due to lice and their not allowed back till all nits are gone policy. a few sick days. a few 'too happy to go to school days'. my dd initially was having a hard time adjusting to first grade so we used to take one day off a month to play hooky. her teacher knows about this and loves it!!!!!

so that shows you what i think of taking days off of school.

i am curious - WHY are you concerned?

i probably would be if my dd was struggling. but obviously she isnt. she is doing well. so it doesnt really matter. we go to a 'rich' public school. a strong PTA -actually two - who raise huge funds to pay for a lot here. so i dont feel guilty. in fact i am all for it as my dd enjoys the time off. plus we have always gone and collected the homework so school hasnt complained.

Unless your children are having trouble in school, I wouldn't worry about it.

Rylie has missed ten days so far this year . . .

-- 5 for a family vacation to Florida
-- 2 for a family trip to Great Wolf Lodge
-- 1 for illness
-- 1 for a trip to D.C. for the presidential inauguration
-- 1 for a family fun day -- we went to a movie and planned on seeing Santa, but missed him.

She's "allowed" 18 unexcused absences. Regardless, I'm not worried. There's no way in hell they'd want to keep her back, and that's really all they can threaten to do.

Is it bad that I don't know exactly?

They missed the first 2 days because we were in Disney World (bad, I know, but no regrets ;-))

1-2 days because of a trip to Colorado. 1 I think we were out of the state, the other they were exhausted from the late flight the night before.

Another 2-3 days for another trip to Colorado (funeral).

2 days for being sick.

another 1-2 days for something random; I'm sure.

I'd say about 8-10 days. Honestly, it's not a big deal to me. They are in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. If we were homeschooling, they would have missed the entire year
no, but really it's not like they get behind or miss out on homework. Their school is pretty laid back and my kids are advanced with all 4's (we don't have letter grades, but they excel).

ETA: It does sound like a lot of days considering the school year is not over, but we don't have anything planned for the next month and a half -- so I imagine they will attend every day until summer break.

my eight yr old's missed *about* 14 so far

we are car-free, I have no one to help me and, like the op said, when one of the kids is sick the other has to miss..

luckily, her school is an awesome charter that doesn't really have 'allowed' days and has worked with us in reguards to late pick-ups and such.

Most of her sick days have been due to no transportation (we live in the hills, so we missed for snow during the winter) and her sister(s) being sick. I don't feel bad about it- we learn a lot at home too

so, all in all, I think you have good reasons and you're not being neglectful or anything.. and it's a big plus that the school doesn't mind

4 for genuine sick
3 different half days for heading out of town, getting back in town late.

He may miss a week coming up here pretty soon. We can't take a spring break trip and dh wants a vacation before summer starts. I have trouble justifying that with only 37 school days left. But we'll see.

DS1 has missed about 8 this year - 5 when he was an Outdoor School (local program) counselor M-F, 2 when he was attending/participating in Provincial gymnastics finals (that was at his school, but he wasn't in class), and 1 sick.

That's by far the most he's ever missed. He's missed 2 days sick a couple of times, but that's it. We've never had any family trips during school, so that hasn't come up

Well, I live in the desert, so the "too cold to walk" doesn't apply to us.

But, since we moved into a new district where the school is not within walking distance, my dd has missed about 15 days a year.

She gets sick a LOT. So, when the school is a busride away, it's easier to keep her home, because the school will probably call anyway. I can't go get her because I have a daycare in my house.

When the school was within walking distance, I could always easily go get her with the daycare kids if the school called.

About 5 days total, all for being sick.

Ds is bussed and so that's not an issue. Even if dd were very ill, I could send ds to the bus stop and ask one of the other parents to walk him home after school.

Is there anyone who lives nearby you so that you could maybe trade off/ask them to pick up your well child and get them to school (and you'd do the same, or maybe walk their kids home some days?)

Just how cold is too cold to walk? I grew up in Minnesota, so my notion of "too cold to walk" = the schools would be closed.

My 11 yo has missed 5, four are for sickness, one was to attend a special (highly educational, but not school-sponsored) event. This kid gets strep at the drop of a hat.

My 8 year old hasn't missed any.

I keep them home if they are sick. We don't take "mental health" days or anything similar.

Each of mine have missed like 6 or 7 days. All were sick days except one for my pre-schooler. He had a two "Christmas Parties" where they made gingerbread house where the parents had to come in a help out. My babysitter fell through on one of the days so I keep him home and went to the Christmas Party for his gymnastics program instead. It has been a tough winter here.

My dd in Grade 5 has missed .5. My dd in Grade 2 has missed 1.5. My dd in Grade 1 has missed 1.

They were illnesses & usually ones where they came home after lunch & most of them were not things that they really needed to come home for.

My dd in Grade 2 will miss another one for her cardiologist appt.

How old are your kids in school & how far from the school do you live?

Unless a kid was throwing up, if 1 was sick with a cold I'd still take them out & walk the other to school. A fever they'd still go to the school to drop the other one off.

My kids walk to school when it's -35 outside. Unless I"m going to the school anyhow first thing, my kids always walk to school by themselves & have since they were in kindergarten.
