Do you celebrate birthdays? DH and I are not in agreement about this. I can't find anything that says it's haraam, he thinks we shouldn't do any birthday activities. I was not going to make a big deal about the party, just my mom, stepdad, sister, niece and nephew, and dh's mom and sister. Pizza and cake. That's it. Opnions?

FTR: we do exchange gifts for our b'days, and maybe go out to dinner if we have time, but I think he wants to stop that too.

Not Muslim here, but I think that once the kid is old enough to understand that everyone else has a birthday party it's pretty cruel to deprive him of one.

As far as a 1 year birthday party? It's kind of just for the parents. I wouldn't do it except DH's whole family will think I'm weird if I don't.

Could it be a cultural thing as opposed to a religious one?

We're Christian, but dh does not like the birthday party thing at all. And where he grew up, many people didn't even know their exact birthday--it just wasn't part of his reality growing up.
