who would be willing to give me prenatal care, I will be having a Homebirth and am fine with UC. Our last two dc were UC, and DH and I are fine alone. I am trying to find someone who would be willing to help me out with bloodwork and US throughout the pregnancy, I am RH- and I would need Rhogam but could go to the ER for the shot if need be.
I have recently found out from my current MW(CNM) that the only MW I know of in RI who might have been able to cover me for a HB will not be able to take me because she is just starting her practice and I would be considered high risk for her.
I appreciate any information that you can give me, I am willing to drive quite a way to have reliable prenatal care and I would love to be able to be honest with my provider about my plans for the birth.

Sue Smith is on the MA RI border in Uxbridge. She gives outstanding prenatal care. Call her. You can google for the number her name and the town.

Are you specifically planning a UC? You may want to contact Kelley Faulkner (Milford MA). I think that she is supportive of UC, is reasonably close to RI, and is a good midwife and person.

Thank you for the responses, i am going to try to contact Kelley Faulkner.
I am resonably sure that Sue Smith is not comfortable with UC.
I read through a few posts earlier and did get a very long list of MW who will attend homebirth in the MA area , but from my experience most homebirth MWs are not always supportive of UC. I was hoping to find someone who had previous experience with a MW who wouldn't freak out if we were set on UC.
Off to go contact Kelley....
another quick question, has anyone here had luck with getting United Healthcare to pay fo rall/part of a homebirth? I am really only worried about the pre-and post natal portions of the charges as we will UC. We did have success with United paying for our daughters birth almost 8 years ago but we had to do some pretty strong pressuring to get the money.
TIA

Isn't homebirth technically illegal in RI? I mean, midwives are not allowed to attend home births. When I lived there this was the case.

In that case, I seriously doubt you could get your insurance to cover any of it.

Homebirth is not illegal in RI, up until recently it was legal for Midwives to attend a birth in RI only if they had a written agreement with an OB for backup. Recently an amendment passed that has changed the requirements to a Midwife having a verbal agreement with an OB for backup. Homebirth attended by a CNM has never been illegal in RI, it has only been unattainable legally because no malpractice insurance would agree to continuing coverage for a Doctor who had a written agreement with a CNM for coverage in a backup situation.
That being said there are many homebirths in RI every year and not all of them are UC, there are midwives who will attend homebirths in RI and usually the prenatal and postnatal billing is covered. If the provider of care is from another state the billing would usually be covered at an 80-20 rate, at least through my insurance presently.

Thank you Pollywog for 'introducing' me to Kelley Faulkner, she is indeed a wonderful person, from my experience on the phone with her,we will get along perfectly and she is just what I was looking for. I do believe that we will have FUN the next few months!!!!!!
