Hi ladies I am hoping to get some info on where I might be able to find a MW in the IE area. I know it's pretty big but would consider all suggestions

We're not even TTC yet but I want to try and get my ducks in a row early the potential baby would be baby #4 and would be my first experience with a MW and possibly a HB (if I can convince DH its a safe thing )
anyhoo- TIA
oh and for those that have insurance - how does that work?

Updated- I am PG now so time is of the essence (sp?)

I'm looking for an IE mw too, so I'm definitely subbing to this thread!

One thing I can say, is that I would not recommend Lori Luyten. She delivered DS, and we at one time loved her, but in hindsight, we have realized that we really didn't get optimum care...

Karen Baker in Yucaipa. Phone: (909) 797-4580

Karen is wonderful to work with. She was my midwife for my first homebirth
(2nd baby). Would have worked with her again for our third had we not moved back to OC.

Insurance - Depends on the coverage you have. Some providers will reimburse a portion of the costs, others won't. We paid out of pocket since our insurance wouldn't cover a penny.

Bump!

Not to hijack, but if anyone has any recommendations for a homebirth mw who is covered by Medi-Cal, please post their info here! Thanks!

Well, we met with Karen a few weeks ago (sorry, forgot to update!), and we really liked her. We also interviewed quite a few other mws, but we haven't made a complete decision yet.

Del Balgas is in Chino. We really like her, and will likely choose her as our mw. One of my best friend delivered her last two with Del, and I was there for both, so I've seen her in action, and she's great.

Michelle Freund is in Oceanside, but will go to certain parts of the IE.

Brenda Capps is in Bakersfield, which is not exactly close, but she'll travel just about anywhere. Here is a thread I had going with some questions about her: http://www.mothering.com/discussions....php?t=668100. Ultimately, we were uncomfortable with her lack of neonatal resuscitation knowledge (she's not licensed, so she doesn't have to have it, and she has no knowledge of it whatsoever), and the distance was a biggie for us, since my first birth was very quick.

We'll also be interviewing Geeta Swamidass (fourth one down), who is in Orange, and Katie McCall (this is her doula business; she's not fully licensed yet and doesn't have a website for her midwifery practice yet). We have experience with both of these ladies too. They were both at the first of the births that I mentioned above (Geeta is Del's partner in midwifery, and Katie was the doula at that birth). Katie was the primary midwife at the second birth I mentioned (with Del assisting/overseeing). Katie was also our Bradley and hombirth class instructor, so we know that she's very knowledgable about everything.

Anyway, HTH!

I've been following this thread with interest and am wondering are there really so few midwives in SoCal that women in the IE need to look as far as Bakersfield to find one? Are they hard to find or are they just not there at all? FWIW I'm moving to Newport Beach later this month

No, there are others too. For me, it was just a matter of interviewing midwives that were recommended to me, and all of the ones I listed were recommended. Here are some I didn't list:

Sue Gill and Karen Pecora are with Blessed Beginnings Midwifery. Sue is in OC somewhere, and Karen is in Lake Elsinore, I think. Sue is wonderful; she was at DS's birth (Lori Luyten was my midwife, and she was with Blessed Beginnings at the time; Sue was there helping Lori). We really would have liked to consider going with Sue, but her cost was too high for us (it's the average fee of most mws, but the others have been willing to work with us because of our financial situation ). Karen I've only met a couple of times, and I havne't ever heard much about her, good or bad.

Lori Luyten is in Chino Hills, with Ancient Paths Midwifery. Like I said before though, I personally wouldn't recommend her.

Midwives that I know of, but don't have any personal experience with (but chose not to interview because of some stories shared with me by friends), are Anne Sommers in Murrietta, Leonetta Clayson in Redlands, and Simona Istrada in Whittier.

There is also Lorri Walker in Irvine. We chose not to interview her, but I have heard a lot of good things about her (some not so good too, but it's going to be that way with every mw). It's pretty easy to risk out of her care though, because she is bound by some pretty strict guidelines as a CNM, and a Medi-Cal provider.

This page has a few other midwives on it that I didn't list: http://www.socalbirth.org/providers/dem.htm

I HIGHLY reccommend Karen Baker. She saved my life. I was seeing her and an OB, and when I thought I was coming down with the flu at 32 weeks, my OB couldn't see me for a few days, and Karen saw me immediately. She found that I had severe preeclampsia and sent me to the hospital for an emergency c-section. If it wasn't for her, I would have started seizuring and probably would have died (according to my OB). After the birth, she came to my house to check up on me and the baby, and has been in contact ever since. From day 1, she was a huge source of support and I honestly don't know what I would have done without her.

Good luck!

Medical won't cover any homebirth....and if you have good insurance then the mw has to be a LM and will be an out of network provider.

With our first baby we qualified for a no deductible hospital birth so our mw gave us a medical rate of 1k off the regular price making it more affordable. Maybe ask this during interviews.

But yes, most mw charge 3-4k for a homebirth. If they get cheaper than that use caution. Check out the sticky for interviewing midwives....it's in the birth and beyond forum under homebirth.

FYI....in regards to the talk about Brenda Capps, if anyone is going to use a mw in the Bakersfield area do more research because there are 3 other LM's that have a much better reputation.
