I always wanted to allow my son to lead the weaning process. He turned 2 the end of Oct. I am very concerned with the unnatural-ness and suddenness of him stopping because he is sick. He has hand, foot and mouth virus. It started Saturday and the last nursing was Saturday early morning. He keeps telling me the "nannon" isn't working and his tongue hurts.

BTW, I am a working mama and one of the most special things when I have been gone all day is that when I get home he comes running to me and tells me "I am your son!!! Mama Nannon!" and we sit together nursing for usually at least 20 minutes and reconnect -- it is when we both put the day behind us...

It sounds like it's painful for him to nurse -not that he doesn't want to nurse. It isn't unusual for some kids to not nurse for a few days during an illness and then go back to nursing - older nurslings have "nursing strikes" too.

yes the same here..
I am sure he will be back.
If it is painful they sometime have to take a break
because it just hurts them. hope this will go away fast
and he will be back nursing.. just keep your milk going :)

it is not weaning, it is just waiting out the pain, in my opinion.

aawww... poor little guy! I agree with the PPs, it sounds like a nursing strike from the pain. Are you able to pump/express? It will help to keep up your supple, plus it may help him out to have breastmilk in a cup during this time if he won't nurse.

My little guy had a really hard time nursing when he had hand foot and mouth. My husband got it at the same time and he said that it hurt to drink anything at all. I pumped while he was unable to nurse. As soon as his mouth started to improve he was eagerly nursing again. I bet it will be the same with your guy.

Poor little guy, that's no fun.
