My husband and son, Scott and Erik have started "Pick it up!" on facebook to invite others to pick up at least one piece of litter each day and recycle it or throw it in the trash.

Please consider joining our efforts and our group "Pick it up!" Invite your friends!"

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gi...7799090&ref=ts

Facebook is a wonderful resource for positive activism. It provides an opportunity for our children to bring attention to issues they love and empowers them to be the change they wish to see.

Ds is passionate about grass-fed beef and is writing to McDonalds about feeding the cows healthier food and water, providing sunshine and shelter and keeping the baby cows with their moms. I figure we'll have a 'write to McDonalds' campaign facebook page soon too. :)

Just joined the facebook page. When I go back on facebook I will mention it in my status. Many times we think that as one person we can't do much. You may have heard this story but I think it applies to this situation.

An old woman was walking along a beach one day. It was covered with starfish who had been washed up with the tides. They would be dead before the next tide took them back out to sea. As she walked along, she would stop, bend over and pick one up and toss it back in to the sea. A young boy stood there watching her for a long time. Finally he said, "Why do you bother? There are so many of them. It doesn't make a difference if you throw them back or not. You can't save them all." The old woman looked at the boy for a moment. Then she slowly bent down and picked up another starfish and tossed it back in to the sea. Then she turned and looked at the boy and said, "It made a difference to that one." Then she turned back and walked on down the beach.

Joined! What a great idea. DH takes the kids on long rambles all the time and he's taught them by example to pick up trash along the way and either bring it home for recycling or to put in the garbage. At 4 and 5, they know what's safe to pick up and what to call an adult for, how to separate recyclables, and how to use Dadoo's hat to carry found cans when he's not looking. (He wasn't a big fan of that one.)
