They actually arrived on June 17th but we're home now! Here's my story. I will try to keep it brief. They were born two days shy of being 37 weeks.

My water broke just after midnight on June 17th. We got moving pretty quickly seeing as it was my third labour and with multiples I had heard things might go faster than normal. Thankfully, MIL was here to stay with ds and dd. We drove to the hospital and once I was there the contractions started. It went pretty quickly and at just over 4:30am I was ready to go. Standard twin protocol here calls for an epidural so that was administered but it only started taking effect as I started to push baby A out. Unfortunately, the epidural made me too comfortable and I couldn't get the hang of the pushing thing so he was helped along with the forceps. After his head was delivered I was able to manage on my own.

Samuel was born at 4:52am and weighed in at 5lbs, 8oz.

After that things are kind of blurry. The OB was attempting to turn Baby B so that I could deliver her. It took a bit of time and I remember asking if we could just wait and see if she would turn on her own. The OB said no and all of a sudden the room was filled with people and I was told a c-section was needed. I started freaking out a bit. Because the epidural was so late in taking effect it was not sufficient eough for surgery so I was put under general anesthetic. That's the last I remember until I woke up a few hours later.

Claire was born at 5:21am and weighed in at 6lbs, 3oz.

After I woke up I was able to talk to the OB who explained what happened. After Sam was born his placenta immediately abrupted and blocked the way for Claire to come out. The OB tried to manouver Claire into a possible vaginal birth position but she insisted on just presenting her hand over and over again and Sam's placenta was still in the way. Then I started to hemmorage. So, an emergency c-section was required.

Two days later I agreed to a blood tranfusion as I had a ton of blood loss and still was not able to stand up without almost fainting. After the transfusion I started to heal more and while the incision is still quite sore I am feeling better.

Sam and Claire are doing wonderfully!! They had a couple of small breathing issues (no oxygen needed, just a bit of extra fluid) which cleared up within the first day. They were immediately able to regulate their temperature and as soon as my milk came in they started gaining weight wonderfully! They did have some jaundice issues that took about 24 hours to clear up.

Overall, it was definitely not the birth I wanted but I have accepted it and am just so very happy to be home with my two little bundles. Ds and dd have been the ideal older brother and sister so far and have lavished tons of love on their brother and sister.

I'm off to catch up a bit and see if there are any other birth stories I might have missed this past week. I'm sending all of you huge remainder of your pregnancy and birthing vibes :

Congratulations on two healthy babies!!! You did a great job and hope you have a healthy and speedy recovery.

I too had a vaginal and csection with my twins about 1.5 years ago. The second twin's cord prolapsed and ended up having him birthed by csection. I also had a blood transfusion on the third day following their birth and received 2 units of blood. I feel your recovery efforts! Although it was difficult at first (due to my milk taking over a week to come in), I nursed them for 14 months. I don't know if your milk has come in or not, but I know from experience it can take a while when you've had a transfusion. I hope only the best recovery and adjustment for your family!
