My baby ate a cheerio!

My ds is almost 7 1/2 months old. He has been on solids now since he was almost 5 months. He is a big healthy baby and has always been "advanced" as far as milestones. I've been reading that it's ok to give finger foods around this age, but I'm really nervous! DS is great with his mushed up solids and I've been making his food more coarse the past few weeks. So, I bit the bullet and put some O's cereal on his highchair tray. I honestly thought he would just play around with them and it would take him a long while to figure out how to pick them up. Well, within minutes, he had one in his hands and put it in his mouth. He looked puzzled for a minute and moved it around his mouth. He never made any type of chewing motion, but then he SWALLOWED it!

Is that how it is supposed go? I mean, I think he swallowed a whole cheerio!! Now I'm nervous again about giving him more!

i'm sure it's fine - those things dissolve pretty well. might i recommend the kashi version of cheerios - called heart to heart. they are even better for you and in addition to the o's they also have little hearts. they have tons of different grains in them and they're great!
it's normal. Em will be seven months old tomorrow, and she has been eating cheerios for awhile now. She pretty much sucks on them til they're the consistency of applesauce {judging by the drooly stuff on her chin} and swallows that... but she's swallowed a few whole and she's still as alive and healthy as ever.
Thanks, that makes me feel better!!
Glad to see this post! I'm thinking of offering Cheerio-type cereal to my ds soon (8 months) but am nervous. Guess we'll give it a try.
I also am soo nervous of feeding dd finger food. She is 7 months. She still only gets puree, strained. It will be nice to give her finger food so she could eat of my plate.
Cheerios just kinda melt into a mush pretty quickly....

Isn't it wonderful to see them learn and grow!
It IS wonderful to watch them learn...I'd just like to watch him learn to chew his food!!

I like "Purely O's" - made by Cascadian Farms. That is what I give my baby. It's organic and there is no added sugar.
We just gave cheerios, too! Very fun. I gave her a teeny tiny itsy bitsy piece of apple and it came back up. Doh. I won't do that again soon.

I let her gnaw on the apple because she can lick it/taste it but not bite pieces off; she seemed to really like it, though she didn't like the mashed apple from a jar...go figure.

I make most of my son's baby food, but I do give jarred food sometimes. My son really dislikes jarred fruits too. I think it's because of the citric acid they put in the jarred fruits. Have you tasted them? They are a lot more tart than the real thing! I think it's pretty fun though to see the little sourpuss face!
