My baby is sleeping -what's going on!?!?

My light-sleeper is suddenly sleeping through most of the night and taking extensive naps!

What is going on?! He's almost 12 weeks old now and I was already wondering if he is starting to teeth because he is drooling so much and chewing on his fists.
Now all of a sudden he gets cranky (I am assuming he is tired) and it can only be fixed with napping.
I am finally catching up on my sleep but it's getting to be so regular and abundant that I am starting to feel too energetic (!!!) to lay down with him.
Is he getting sick?
Most other times he is acting fine, turning into a very talkative, fun baby, etc.

Edited to add: I guess it's all relative so here is today's schedule:
went to sleep at 10.30pm, woke up at 4.30am for some nursing, pooped and changed diaper from 5am to 6am (he likes to sit up for pooping so I get up with him). Then some more sleeping until about 8.30am. Took him for a little walk to get some fresh air.
By 11am he was cranky again so back to bed. He slept till 1.40pm and he just got whiney again so back to napping at 3pm. Isn't that entirely too much napping?
We are going to see our GP for his 3-month-checkup on the 22nd. Should I call and see if she wants to see him earlier?

he sounds happy to me. i woudlnt take him to the dr. if his only "symptom" is that he's sleeping. it looks like he's nursing well. babies need their rest. it looks like he had an almost 3 hour nap. as long as he nursed immediately prior and right after that, i woudlnt worry. BUT, if he isn't getting to sleep until late, you may want to limit his naps to 2 hours. of course, i never wake my baby up. he gets up when he wants to. of course, that means he doesnt go to bed until midnight some nights and some families cant take taht schedule. its ok with me, though, so i just allow him to do whatever. if i were working, i woudlnt be able to do that.

My DS sleeps a lot extra when he's on a growth spurt, that could be it. As long as he's alert and content the rest of the time and eating fine I wouldn't worry.
If your baby is healthy in all other aspects and is sleeping a lot, CELEBRATE!!! enjoy it while it lasts, the phase may not last forever and before you know it you're posting questions about how to get your LO to sleep more

Growth spurt sounds about right... he's 17 pounds and 26 inches at 11 1/2 weeks...
My son is 3 months, 3 weeks and he has been doing that for 2 weeks now! Exactly as you describe! I think he is starting to teeth because he is biting my fingers and his hands so hard right now and the whole drooling bit. The growth spurt thing makes total sense too, espc. since when he is up from a nap or from over night sleeps he seems famished!

No this is not too much napping. Mine does the same. He has around 2 hours of play time before he has to have a nap. Sometimes it can be pushed to 3 hours. I have found if he naps well he sleeps better at night.

Also he might be going through a growth spurt, (is he eating more?) and may need more sleep.

Or...you may be just more in tune with his cues and can now recognize his signs for sleeping, feeding, play, etc...

Good work!

A.
