I wanted to post this story here...not exactly sure why. I guess to debrief a little and maybe get some feedback.

Here goes...

This past weekend was our town's yearly festival, but we just moved here 2 months ago and so it was our first experience. I had a friend come into town with her two young boys for the weekend to visit. We were hoping to find some fun things to do with all our kids (I have 2 young boys also). I had seen that there were free trolley rides one of the days and so we headed downtown to find the fun. After the mile+ walk with strollers, bikes, slings, etc we arrived only to find that the trolley rides were done
: (times had been posted wrong on the internet), all the balloons gone
:
: and the food vendors (at this particular park) out of food
:
:
: .
All the kids handled it fine, but we treated them to a quick stop at the 50's style candy store as an incentive to get us (the mothers) back home. We thought "okay, tomorrow will be better..."

Well, the next day my DH was able to join us and so we decided to take the kids down to the carnival to go on the ferris wheel or carousel. Again (we are glutens for punishment
) we let the two 3.5 year olds ride their bikes down there (over a mile away). They did great...got to the carnival...rides didn't start for an hour...so we decided to grab some carnie food while we wait :puke .
We went to go find a place to sit down and eat. We were walking along the sidewalk by the river (we had ditched and locked up the bikes by this time). My 3 yo was leading the pack, with DH following 5-10 feet behind him, my friend and I further back. My friend had turned to talk to me as I was chasing my 17 mo and then I heard a crash. I looked up ahead to see that a man and his bike were ON TOP OF my 3 yo. DH (and some bystanders) had seen the whole thing and this man plowed straight on into my child.

We quickly realized he was QUITE drunk (and by quite I mean .30 BAL
)
The man got up and was saying "what the f*#%!" and "son of a b*#@*!" and saying the my DS just ran in front of him (which he hadn't, but te man was drunk). He was more worried about getting one of our napkins to wipe up his small cut than he was about the well being of the child he just hit
. My DH could have killed him. A few words were exchanged, but it was short lived and we sent him on his way. We just needed him out of there. DS was very upset, but thank God he walked away with just an abrasion and a bump on the back of his head (he had SMACKED his head when he landed
).

One of the other men (Stan) that saw the whole thing later came and told DH where the drunk man and his bike were if we wanted to call the police. We didn't at the time, but later realized that that man needs help. So DH went to see if he was still where we told we told he was at and Stan told us he had already called the police and they were on their way
Thank you good samaritans! We were told that this man had several run-ins with the police and was going to be taken to detox. Hope it helps. Who knows what could happen next time???

DS is doing fine. We have just tried to tell him that the man makes bad decisions and drinks too much alcohol so his brain doesn't work well and he can't drive his bike safely. So, the police took him to a hospital to help him. We are big bike riders and DS loves riding bike so I wanted him to understand that this was just one of those weird things that happen. After DS woke up from his nap later that day and felt his owie, he made a comment about "that man who ran me over had an owie on his cheek, too."
Bless his heart.

There were a few other minors things that happened later, but this is already l.....o.......n......g..... enough
I think in the end we were just more bothered by what COULD HAVE happened than what actually happened.

Gotta run...sad baby right now.

Thanks for the replies mamas.

Just to top things off, we received our cell phone bill in the mail...$1700. Yep, that is right $1700 (normally $60). We have no idea what happened, something about trying to transfer data, download, something or other that neither my husband or I have any idea how to do with our phone. The cell phone company is 'investigating'. I am hoping that our kids didn't accidentally push all the right buttons to do all this, three days in a row, three different times?!?

They say bad things come in 3's.........uh, oh.....what's next???
