My dd the worksheet junkie!

So when I announced to my dh that I'd like to HS our 3 1/2 yo dd he promptly went out and bought her a few of those curriculum workbooks from Sam's club.

In theory, I'm very against learning via route, closed ended activites especially for young children but you know what, my dd LOVES sitting down and doing worksheets with us.

I thought at first it was simply the attention that she gets from having us work with her on a task but I don't think that's it because given the choice of activities she will almost ALWAYS choose her workbooks over lots of other activity choices (reading stories together, painting, cooking, etc.)

Any thoughts on this?

My nephew is 6, public schooled and last Christmas asked for a math book. His folks got him a activity book and when they came down here, every time we saw him, he was working in it. He just loves them!

I think as long as you're not forcing her to do them and making a huge deal about what she isn't doing, then it'll be okay. Some kids just really love those things (my dh does also!)
my dd (age 5) also loves worksheets and the activity workbooks. We bought her a bunch of the "kindergarten" ones for a long car trip and since then she loves doing them. She catches on really quick and loves doing matching, mazes, writing, counting, etc all those little exercises that they include. I have also printed her off things to do off the internet. We have been working on math (basic addition and subtraction) with concrete objects and she has recently started doing a bunch of written problems in her notebook, I just make them up and leave a space for her to write an answer. I am amazed at how much she enjoys this type of work and how good she is at it.

I have pretty much decided I don't want to use textbooks or worksheet type stuff while homeschooling. I really want to do as much montessori in the home, which does not include this type of work. But because my dd is loving it at the moment, I don't see any harm with letting her do it, when she asks and enjoys it and is getting something out of it.

Your dd may be interested in it for a while and then later on not have a desire to do it and that's okay. Like the pp said I think what's important is to not force or expect her to do these things but if she enjoys doing them then thats okay.

Around that age my dd was into them too. She no longer is .I also agree they aren't the best way to learn but I think the problem is when they are forced on the kid. If the child chooses them then they are just fun
For my dd they were just activity books. She has a mom who likes crossword puzzles and word finds and that's similar. Don't sweat it

I swore my kids would never use workbooks. Then my friend gave my daughter some, and a new love was born. No, it was not between me and my friend or my daughter and my friend. It was between my daughter and the workbooks! She LOVES them and requests them every day. In fact, I have even purchased some for her because she was devastated when we used up the first three we got. My daughter has a very precise personality and I think workbooks fit her personality. She can start a task, complete it, and look back to see tangible results. And, MOST IMPORTANTLY, she has fun doing it.

Namaste!
I htink some people just elarn best that way. i am a girl who likes worksheets, filling in forms and paperwork (no kidding, I enjoy filling out my tax forms), doing games and hat not on paper etc etc . . . give me the same lessonn in an open ended way and I will likely not follow or be bored to tears. I like to just sit down with a work book and go through the process, see it all laid out and lined up and making sense. Thats who I am.
and why i have never understood everyones aversion to workbooks.

I have 2 kids who LOVE workbooks also. It surprised the heck out of me. Just today, my 6yo DS was asking to do his reading workbooks INSTEAD of reading books together on the couch. HHhmmmm....

But then, like Lilyka, I also like to fill in blanks and do workbook-y type of things... maybe it's genetic
