Although I don't have any boys, when my dh and I have talked about circumcision - if we were to have a boy - I have always questioned the practice (though I never delved too deeply into it because I had a girl) and he was pro-circ because of his fear that our son would be teased.

Well, our dd is now 15 months and since she was born, I have become much much more interested in natural family living and it's become very near and dear to my heart. My dh has become a lactivist because he has seen the benefits of bfing (still going strong!) but he hasn't become as nutty as I have about so many of the other issues out there.

Anyway, we were interviewing a new pediatrician and I asked her what she thought about circumcision and she said she chose not to with her 2 boys. It got us talking again and all of a sudden dh said he's totally on board with no circ if we ever have a boy! He says he can remember being circumcised himself as a baby and can't imagine submitting his own child to this procedure.

I don't know if we'll ever even have a boy, but it just delights me that we're both on the same page!

Sorry for the ramble, I'm just feeling exhilarated and wanted to share!

That's great news! Thanks for sharing - we are all so happy for you both that this isn't a difficult issue for you and even happier for any future sons you may have!

Your dh is a 'keeper', definitely!

Nathan:

I was telling my dh about it tonight and he said he'd be glad to tell his story and his memory of it.

After a call to his mother, this is what we know and what he remembers (as he sits beside me dictating )

When I was born at the hospital (1966), a doctor performed a circumcision, but apparently did it wrong which required me to go to another doctor to have the procedure done again. My mom was told that she should wait to go back and have it done after it had healed a bit. So, when I was about 2 weeks old, I went back and was subjected to a second circumcision.

I do not remember the pain of it, but I clearly remember my penis sticking to my diaper and couldn't understand why it was red and bleeding. I couldn't understand what had happened to make it so uncomfortable and itchy and scabbed. I simply couldn't figure out what had happened.

I just can't imagine now having a pure, innocent baby look into my eyes so trusting and loving, and then taking this child and cutting a piece of his penis off for no good reason at all. "Welcome to the world, now let's cut off part of your penis!" Does that make sense?!?!

Anyway, that's my story.
