My doctor can't see me until May 5th

i found out i was pregnant on saturday but am pretty sure i am about 7 weeks (1st day of last period was feb. 14 - 1st and only post partum period
). i'm breastfeeding so i didn't figure out i am pregnant for a while (our new nursing problems actually cued me). my doctor can't see me until may 5, which puts me at about 11 weeks. it just feels so long to have to wait to see that reassuring heartbeat.

i think i am kinda freaked out because i am not having any real symptoms yet - maybe a little more tired but that is it. i suppose it could be because i am breastfeeding.

is anyone else having to wait this long for their first ob appointment?

Me too! I am ten weeks tomorrow and the date of my last period was February 1st. I wouldn't get to see my OB until May 5th too! However, I am going back to my family doctor this week for a check. This is my first baby and I had called the OB's office but there is a waiting list for cancellations.
We conceived after the first pp period, too.

As for waiting, it's really not that unusual to wait until the 8-12 week range to get in to see a doctor in a busy area (not sure where you are). I went in at 7 weeks, but only because I already had my anual exam scheduled... and I like my doctor so I didn't push it back. But, had the appointment not been on the books, I probably wouldn't have even requested an appointment until 12 weeks. There's really not much they do at the first appointment other than draw some blood and do their own pregnancy test. If you're on prenatals already, just keep taking care of yourself and by the time you get in for your appointment, you may even be able to hear the heartbeat =)

Eleven weeks and no appointment in sight. I'm on a MW's list, she's having family issues, and when she gets everything together, she'll call me. I don't know when that will be, I'd actually rather it be later then sooner.
I'm not too into prenatals, always felt they were a waste of my time.

I'm invading November from October, only because I can really relate! I saw my family doc at 11wks and she put in the requisition for me to see another doc for my prenatals. They can't see me until May 16th, which puts me at just over 19 weeks.

I was a little bummed because I really wanted to hear the heartbeat before then. So, I rented a doppler. I'm going to listen to it once and return it. That's about all I care about between now and 19 weeks. Live, healthy baby in my womb

I had a prenatal at 8 wks but there was nothing they could really tell me about the baby. I think I would have liked to have an u/s then but insurance only covers one, so the first time I'll be able to hear the heartbeat will be at my next prenatal at 12 weeks. I can totally relate to your wanting to hear that....I find myself patting my belly and saying, "booboo? are you really in there or what? I hope you're growing all right!" while my husband chuckles in the background...
and ask to be seen sooner? I was seeing an RE, so it was very different in my experience. They did an u/s at 6 weeks to check for the h/b (which we saw!). We had another one at 8 weeks again and then I was considered "normal" LOL! But my doc was great, he'd take me in anytime I had a freak out or anything to reassure me. I'm sure you are totally fine but if its really bothering you, you could call and ask them if they'd see you sooner.
I can really understand wanting to know what's going on with your baby, but I don't think it's unusual for the docs to want to wait to see you.

With my first pg, I didn't get to see an OB until I was 11 wks. They had me meet with a health educator before that so that she could tell me about all the tests I could have during my pregnancy. It is standard here with Kaiser insurance not to see a doctor till you're about 12 wks.

I was seeing a midwife from the time I was about 8 weeks, though. I liked going to chat with her, but there wasn't really much for her to check on during the first trimester. I refused the doppler during my whole pregnancy because of concerns about radiation, so I didn't get to hear the heartbeat till the second trimester with my mw's long fetoscope.

If any of you have the budget for it, I would definitely recommend buying a fetoscope with a long tube so that you can check the hr anytime. I had my dh check the baby's hr all the time to reassure me! I think for this pg, we might buy a longer fetoscope so that I can hear, too.

I just had to post this link in case anyone is actually interested in a fetoscope. This is the cheaper version, but it only costs $20! The better quality one with the short tube is $105.

I looked at them, too, but their shipping is outrageous - and they don't tell you the total shipping until after you place the order (I called to find out what the total would be, and it was $8.05 for their shipping and "small handling charge")

I ordered one on eBay, as well as a **cheap** stethoscope and large adult BP cuff. I don't recommend the $1.99 stethoscope (I got what I paid for - but it will be a fun toy for my son), but I HIGHLY recommend the company - as well as the fetoscope I purchased from them. The guy who helped me was wonderful about answering questions, too.

(I meant to add - it was $12.75 plus $7.00 shipping - and their combined shipping is really cheap if you purchase other things. The company's link is - http://stores.ebay.com/BP-Medical-Supplies )

how far along do you have to be before you can use a fetoscope?

About 20 weeks - give or take depending on baby's size and mama's "fluffiness."
I also am simply outraged at how long it takes to be seen by someone! I just feel that the first few weeks are so important and what if there was something we didn't know or just could use the support of a trained professional!!! Some people don't have much family support and have never been pregnant before. We just heart the heartbeat last week - at the end of our 10th week! I would have liked to see an ultrasound and it's just so great to have that concrete picture to look at. I think it's about managed care personally...makes me sad. Just one more way that our society is not taking care of us like it could/shoud. Well, I'm glad we're taking care of eachother and am thankful to all of you for being here and sharing support, wisdom, experiences! This is a great group of women!
My first appointment is also May 5th, and that puts me at 10 weeks. As this is my first pregnancy, I had no idea when the first appointment was supposed to be, but I'm also totally freaked out so I wanted one sooner than that. But no, the place I'm going says that they like to wait that long. I guess it makes sense ... just in case, you know?
Most of the time, there's nothing that can be done in the first trimester. They can do an early u/s to date the pregnancy and check that it's in the right place (and I think all the OBs in my area do this around 6-8 weeks), but that's really all they can do. If you need support prior to your first appointment, you can call your OB or midwife anytime!

My midwife doesn't see women until 12 weeks, simply because there's just nothing she can do. She doesn't have u/s (and doesn't recommend it either), and you can't hear the heartbeat on the doppler that early. The first trimester is a long waiting game, but there's not much the medical system can do to change that! They can't speed up the process and get you to the 2nd trimester quicker.

I'm 7 wks today and my appt isn't until May 3rd. I'll be ten weeks by then. I did however get to have a sono and we saw the heartbeat... that was VERY reassuring. I only got the sono because I'm considered high risk, otherwise it's my ob's practice that you get a sono at 16 wks and one around 20. I agree with the other moms, I think it's pretty common for docs to wait til 10-12 wks before they see you. Unless your put in the high risk category it's near impossible to get a sooner appt.

Popping in from August, but drs/mws around here won't see you untl 10-12 weeks. No point really.
I'm not feeling many symptoms either. And I've been having some spotting which is worrying me a bit. But even though I already went in for my first appointment I won't get to hear the heartbeat till my next appointment on May 9. I don't think the pg will feel real until then, and I don't think I'll relax until then either. Can't wait till the 2nd trimester!
I have mixed feelings about seeing the ob early. If they can't get you in for an appt, they should at least have you drop by to pick up some info - or mail it to you. Stuff like what foods to avoid, what a typical visit will be like, what routine to tests (like gd) to expect and when, how often you'll be seen. My ob gave me a huge folder with stuff like that. It helps to just get a sense for what to expect.

I highly recommend that everyone should really start doing some reading NOW, when you've got the time and you may have questions. All of the things you mentioned above can be found in good pregnancy books. I picked up a copy of Dr. Sear's "The Pregnancy Book" at my local public library a couple of weeks ago and have been leafing through that.

Do NOT however buy the "What to Expect" books. They are garbage. I made that mistake with my first dd. The only thing that book is good for is as a doorstop.
It isn't even very interesting to read either. blah
