I've been preparing myself for this day for a few years now but now that the time is near I'm struggling. I've had this dog since I was 17 and she'll be 19 in October so I've had this dog most of my life. Honestly right now I really wish she'd just go and be out of pain but she keeps holding on. I really don't expect her to see Sunday night. I just need a few hugs if you have any to spare.

Thanks to all the kind words. My dog passed away sometime last night. I'm sorry to say I didn't stay up with her all night. I was going to but I fell asleep. Honestly I think she told me to go to sleep so I wouldnt be awake at that moment. I'm at peace but very heartbroken right now.

About a year and a half ago, my dog was dying. I came to MDC to find comfort and companionship while I stayed up all night with her. The women who responded to my posts helped me make it through the night.

I'm so sorry your beloved family member is passing. I'm glad she had a long, lovely life with you.

Our culture doesn't really acknowledge a pet's passing very well. They ARE members of the family, and they do deserve to be mourned.

I'm so sorry for your pain.

Oh I'm starting to cry. I am so sorry. 19 years, WOW, what a lucky dog to have an owner like you for so long.

It's written for children but I find the "Dog Heaven" (and in our case "Cat Heaven") books so cathartic and comforting.

to you. I am so sorry you have lost a faithful friend.

I'm sorry your dog died. It is so sad. We had our suffering dog put to sleep three days ago. (Kidney failure.) He was an 11-year-old Lab, and our DDs had lived with him all their lives. We're climbing out of the intense, quaking sadness that we had the day and the day after he died, but now everything feels hollow and flat, and the house is too quiet--no jingling collar, no tapping toenails on the wood floor--and our cat doesn't seem like enough. I swear I've grieved more for some animals we've lost than I have my own family members . . .

Hugs to you.

Thanks everyone for you kind words. She lived a long and good life with us and for that I am happy. Our vet, for the past 2 years, has said that she seldom sees dogs make it as long as our dog had made it. I seem to be a person who has dogs live long lives as the dog previous to this one lived 16 years.

Thanks for the book recomendation and I wil be looking for that book soon.

We lost our dog on Saturday afternoon- a quick and tragic mystery. I wish we'd had time to say good-bye. :
