Hi everyone! I and my spouse divorced 5 months ago. We have a 5 years old child Hanna, who lives with me. But now my ex wants her to relocate from our state, NJ, to New York. Of course, as her mother, I don't want to let Hanna go with him. I read the article about this case (Can a Custodial Parent Move out of State with a Child?) but haven't quite understood what exactly do I have to do to seek an interdict in our court. Could anyone who had such a problem give me a bit of useful advice?

No experience here but wanted to wish you good luck. I know custody things and moves can get tricky. Maybe discuss with your attorney.

Can't help with legal specifics, but as a child of parents who lived in different states starting when I was 13, I would support a law stipulating that both parents must live within 10 minutes of the child unless exemption is obtained through family court. You're not married anymore but you will always be family.

This is a nightmare. My XH made darn sure I was tied to him and I spent a fortune in legal fees trying to break free of the town we lived in without forfeiting all custody of my son. This is just one more way abusive ex partners manipulate and control their victims. Because we were chained to that town and my XH, my oldest son and I still suffer to this day and he is 28 years old now.

So sorry to see that this was so impactful for you and your son.
