I will be able to have my very first garden this year. I have no clue when to plant or what to do. I really need help. I bought some different vegie seeds but plan on getting more. I also want to grow some fruit. Any help would be great. Maybe recommendation of some books or websites for a first time gardener My soil in my yard is almost black and I have heard that is rich and great for gardens, is that true? What tools do I need? When do I plant what? Anything else you think I should know?

I suggest going to your library and checking out whatever you can on gardening really- that sounds interesting to you!. Soil is very important. I don't think color is the only factor in this tho.
And with a new plot you may want to get a soil test done.
I would go read. THis is my first year too- and I have been reading and I feel much more prepared.

The answers to some of your questions are going to depend on a few things. Where do you live? (in other words: Do you have temperate summers or hot ones? Do you have high humidity in the summer or is it dry? Does it snow?) This will effect what you can grow and when (and how) you should start.

Does your yard get a lot of afternoon sunlight, or is it in shade most of the day? This will also effect what you can grow.

As for tools... if your dirt is black, then it's probably not clay, but is it loose or is it packed? Are there a lot of rocks? This will effect how much work it's going to be to get started.

Some great books to read for beginners: New Square Foot Gardening (even if you're not following his principles, it's got some good information), Carrots Love Tomatoes (on companion planting).
