Yay, I get to make my first TMI post!

Recently my IBS has gotten a bit worse, not surprisingly. To ease the irritation that often accompanies frequent bowel movements, I like to apply a little Vaseline to my - ahem - anal region. The other day I noticed a small bump just inside the anal opening. It doesn't hurt or anything, but I'm wondering how long it's been there. It's hard to tell just by feeling how large it actually is, but it's probably pretty small since when you try to judge size by feel you always overestimate, kwim?

Anyway, does this sound like it could be a hemorrhoid? I've never had them before. Should I bring it up with my OB next week? I'm thinking yes, although I'm not really worried about it at this stage. Comments?

It sounds like it could be a hemorrhoid, but I would ask your doc if you are worried.

Yeah, a hemorrhoid, or maybe just a little distended blood vessel from some straining - not quite at hemi status. LOL!

Could be... or could be normal... or could be HPV (genital warts) which LOTS of people have and don't even know they have. HPV tends to outbreak in times of emotional or physical stress (like pregnancy.)

I have HPV and since it's not internal, it's not the cancer-causing kind. You can contract it from using someone's damp towel while swimming, etc. It's a virus just like warts you get on your fingers, etc. You don't necessarily have to be promiscuous to contract it, and you wouldn't have had to have anal sex to have it in that particular area either. AND you can have it for years and not know it.

Hopefully that's NOT what it is, but your MW or OB would be able to tell you, and I thought I would mention it because it's probably not something you would typically think of.

HPV came to mind too - as Manda said, it's everywhere and basically epidemic.

So is this a harder lil bump like a wart or maybe a cluster of warts (often can cluster during pregnancy)? Or is it a larger, softer, inflamed tissue area? That would be more likely a 'roid.

Does it burn or itch like a mofo? In that case, definitely a hemorrhoid! Although I guess some 'roids can also be painless as well, which would definitely be my first choice of 'roid type... if given a choice... which you rarely are.

TMI TMI TMI
It might also be a little sebaceous cyst, which I get in that, ahem, area. Basically a little, painless pocket of sebum.

Seriously though, never heard of these. Do they go away? Are they inside or outside?

As long as we are all TMI... if you have ever had an anal fissure those can leave little "skin tags" behind when they heal. I have a couple of those and they are similar in size and appearance to a small hemorrhoid but are softer and aren't ever itchy or painful. Though they do get irritated sometimes after lots of wiping or when the fissures get flared up again.

Oh, mama, you're going to make me EXPLAIN anal sebaceous cysts? There goes my last shred of modesty.

Basically, they are non-painful pimples. I get them on the outside. Ahem, SEBUM basically blocks a pore and forms a little bump. They come, they go, you can empty them (by squeezing them, and yes it's gross, but YOU ASKED for it, Gina! )

Sebum. Sebum sebum sebum!

Huh, it's starting to sound very silly.

Well, shoot, I guess I'll just ask the doc. It could be anything! Thanks for all the info.

It totally sounds like a hem. to me. It sounds exactly like what I had when I had some poo problems. And it went away soon after. HPV would be way smaller, it is sometimes undetectable.

Well...I have to admit that I jokingly said "anal anomaly" to DH as I opened this and he picked up the phone. Just the way it was phrased made me laugh.

But it sounds like a hem. to me. I'd have your OB/MW check it out JIC because it could be any number of the other things mentioned. But likely just a hem. since constipation and pressure down there can cause them and they're much more likely to show up in the third trimester.

This thread does make me laugh though.
