My little dog, my baby before I had babies, was hit by a car last night. He was nearly 10 yrs old and spent most of the day sleeping in various spots around the house and I usually didn't hear from him unless he 'asked' to be let out or back in. I think we let him out late last night and didn't miss him until animal control left a message this a.m. He was microchipped, so they tracked us down that way. I guess he was still alive when the person who hit him got to him, but badly injured.

I feel so bad that I didn't miss him last night. And I'm heartbroken that he had to suffer before he passed. They aren't answering at the number they left, so I don't even know if I'll be able to pick him up to bury him.

This happened to us three years ago with one of our cats. My cats are strictly indoor now, but she came to us as a 7yo indoor/outdoor cat and would have no part of staying inside all the time.

We had her for another 8 years before she didn't come home one night. Being a cat, and being somewhat elusive by nature, I didn't miss her for two whole days! My DH finally said that he thought she was missing. I felt so badly, but I'd been crazy busy all week and figured she was sleeping in the house somewhere.

We never did find out what happened to her, but we guess it was a coyote. She was a wicked smart cat, and we can't imagine that she'd get lost. She had a collar with her info and address on it, so I figure if someone found her or hit her with a car, we would probably be called eventually. I almost hope it was a coyote; she had hyperthyroidism and wouldn't do well without her meds. If someone stole her, it's not likely they'd concern themselves with her health.

Anyway, I'm so very sorry about your little dog. I have a 13yo little dog, too.
