My mom is bleeding.....please read...

629 Views 18 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  darlindeliasmom
Since yesterday around 4pm or so my mother started having quite a bit of vaginal bleeding. She is passing clots....some the size of quarters.

She can not be pregnant. She is 47 years old. Her cycle is very regular.....I think every 30 days.

Apparently she has been spotting the last month a bit.....but nothing like this. She is gushing blood when she stands up. She leaked all over her bed last night.

What do you think it could be? Menapause? Stress? (She has been EXTREMELY stressed lately)

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your help!

I would suggest that she schedule an appointment with her family practioner or gynecologist for tomorrow. It would be best if she could get in to be seen before it resolves so the provider can see what's up.

If she loses a lot more blood tonight (filling heavy duty pad in less than an hour through 2 or 3 pads), she should go to the ER.
I am taking her in tomorrow at 1030am

I just talked to her and she said she is feeling better, but I am still planning to check on her later to make sure.

What are some things that could cause this?
not sure... but could you imagine being a big sister in 9 monts!

i hope she is feeling better
Hormone craziness at menopause
Vaginal dryness leading to tearing and bleeding in the vagina or vulva
Blood disorders that impair clotting
Endometriosis
Fibroids
Polyps
Cancer
Thyroid Conditions
Wow...lots of stuff.

Thanks for answering the thread Apricot!

My grandmother has had issues like this because of medications she was taking.

My mom is not on any meds....
It's one of those things where a look and a feel is worth a 1000 word description. Bleeding at menopause or near menopause is something that should always be investigated thoroughly, just like bleeding in children. The great majority of the time, it's nothing serious, but it's not something to put off for later, either.
A little history, an exam, maybe some blood work or an ultrasound and you should know what's up.

I hope she is feeling better soon.
Thank you....I hope she feels better soon too

I hope she is feeling better and the bleeding slows. My mom also had bleeding with menopause and ended up needing a d&c.
Hang in there- hope all is well.

Any update on this morning's appointment?
Man, way to make me feel old...I am 47, and have had periods like this off and on for the past few years--even before I had del. There's a name for it: flooding.
Susun Weed's New Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way says that the occurrence of this in the menopausal and perimenopausal years (which is me; I'm still cycling regularly) can be caused by fibroids or endometriosis but can also be caused by the hormonal changes taking place, particularly high progesterone levels. Since the progesterone levels don't drop like a normal cycle, the endometrium keeps growing thicker, so when you DO get a period it is heavy and full of scary clots.
There are lots of things you can do; docs will recommend a D&C, some even a hysterectomy. But in some people, like me, it's temporary. The biggest concern is the loss of iron.
Susun Weed suggests seeing your healthcare person if 1) your period lasts >1 month, 2)you have pain or bleeding with intercourse, or 3) the flooding is accompanied by persistent pelvic or low back pain.

I love this book; it has helped me stay calm with some of the crazy things my hormones have done to me!!

Hope your mom is feeling better and that her healthcare provider could calm her fears.
