What do those of you who own/know someone who owns/heard about them, think of the Baby Trekker carrier? My mom has offered to get it for Samantha for Christmas and from what I can see it is a great little carrier. So, ignoring the outlandish price tag, what are your opinions?

BTW, did I mention that I love my Mommy

That's the one I want, too, and I think my mother is going to buy it for me! It's 100% cotton and you can breastfeed in it! For some reason, I'm just not a sling person. I prefer the front carrier style. But it's so hard to find one that's cotton that you can bf in! I'm curious to hear the opinions of those who already have a Trekker...

Well, we bought a Trekker finally after humming and hahing about it for 8 months. We have a Maya Wrap, but I wanted something for carrying dd on my back. I was so excited, but, it just didn't work for us. We returned it. DH felt it put all the weight on his shoulders, none on his hips. I just didn't find it comfortable and when we put dd in the front, she didn't like the cloth up around her mouth. Of course, we couldn't give it a real workout because then we wouldn't have been able to return it.

So, it didn't work for us, but I read such rave reviews that I'm sure it works well for alot of people. I am still sold on the sling for front carry, but can't get it to work for back carry. We're using a frame pack now.

When you wore it on the front, was the baby facing out or facing in?

I have one that I've never really used. I got the XL size for my husband so that he could use it as a backpack on Tuesday nights when I went to choir practice. However, he needed help getting it on, so he only used it once. I decided to use it, but I could not get her on in the back position by myself. I tried the laying the baby in the Trekker on the bed, but it just didn't work and one of the D rings came off that time. I need to take one of the other ones off and relocate it to the position where the one came off, but I wasn't sure how secure it would be. I think it was too late to send it back at that point, so I kept it thinking I might use it in the front carry position for my next baby.

Right now the sling is working really well in the front carry position, so I don't feel the need to break out the Trekker. I took it to a regional LLL conference so a friend could try it, but she didn't like it as she felt it was just too bulky. But that could be because we have the XL size which has longer D ring straps.

I think about using the Baby Trekker right now just because right now I'm using a sling but I do notice that my right mid-back muscles starts to feel a little achey after several hours of this. I could switch the sling to the other shoulder, but it only feels right on the right shoulder.

I've tried the Baby Bundler sling which goes over both shoulders, but I am too big for it and couldn't get the knots tied as there wasn't enough material leftover.

Thank you for your input, every opinion helps. I just wanted to make one comment about the whole D ring problem. On the Trekker's web site it says that they fix it free for the first year and for a nominal fee there after. Not sure what their definition of nominal is but, if you still want to use it, you might want to consider looking into it.

I have the trekker, and I like it. I love my sling, too, but for walking outside, over outerwear, the trekker is great. I haven't tried ds on my back yet (he's only 3 mo), but he likes being on my front, facing me. I"m hoping he'll like being on dh's back next spring, when we go out hiking etc.

i liked mine well enough. it took about a week before i got good at putting it on my back by myself, but it was definitely do-able. the padded straps are great. i got it strictly for the back carry for dd as a toddler. i had previously owned a sling, a bjorn and a hip carrier.
have you checked out all the carriers at www.peppermint.com ? you might find something you like better or for a lower price.

So if I'm a size 18/20, should I get the larger size or no? Hmm.

I emailed my mom and husband after replying to this thread the first time and told them this is what I want for xmas. My mom replied, "Order it and I'll write you a check."

I don't think you would need to. I find that the larger size has way more sizing options than I would need, and I was about a 22/24 when I got mine. I got it so big because my husband was big and he had a wide chest, so I figured we could use the bigger one because of him.

We love our Baby Trekker. I also have a maya, a new native, a bjorn, and one other front carrier. I am something of a carrier junkie.

I'll tell you what, though. The Baby Trekker is best on my back out of all the carriers. I still use my slings for quick trips into the grocery store, and around the house, but otherwise, we use the trekker.

My little boy is 17 pounds and my back was really starting to get sore. I read such great things about the trekker, so I decided to try it. I am so glad I did, and I am sure that you will be, too.

If you haven't already bought yours, consider searching ebay. I got mine there in practically mint condition for $50.

Good luck, and enjoy your trekker!!

edited to add that it is not my fave for nursing. My new native is so good for that, and besides, in the trekker, Baby is soooo occupied looking around that he is really too distracted to nurse.

I bought a trekker because it seemed to me the best option available. The store that I bought it from let me try it out for a while. I carried the baby in it all the way to the bank and back and I was amazed that my back wasn't aching! I was sold immediately. I am tall (5'11') and not very "big" so the straps are a little much sometimes, it seems to me. I can't imagine one with longer straps! It's like an octopus before you put it on and the straps drag all over the floor if you pick it up in a hurry. Otherwise I think it's the best carrier I've tried (for comfort...) I also think it would fit quite a range of sizes, so I wouldn't get the XL unless it was absolutely nesseccary.

We have quite a little collection of carriers, slings & pouches, and the trekker was the very first one we bought...and the one that we use the least! While I find it to be quite comfortable and easy to use, I still prefer to use our Ergo carrier. It's similar to the trekker in that it's more of a "carrier" rather than a sling, but it can be EASILY worn on both the front and back. (I emphasize "easy" because I had no luck using the trekker as a back carrier) The ergo is also really great because it provides more of a seat for your baby, and they aren't simply hanging with their legs dangling on either side. IMO, I feel better about this for her spine, and now that she is older our daughter will voice her own preference for the ergo... we can't argue with that!

Another wonderful thing about the ergo is that it is designed more like a backpack, complete with a waist belt. This makes it so that I feel NO weight on my shoulders at all ~ even after hours of walking. I feel most of the work in my hips, and it's more of a "work out" sensation than a feeling of strain.

The *only* downside I can see to the ergo is that because of the way it is designed (the seat), you cannot wear your baby facing forward when they are on your front. It hasn't been a problem for us, but just thought I'd mention it.

This is just my 2cents. From what I've seen, preferences with carriers & slings are just that... preferences! I know many people who *rave* about their trekkers, and they do have their merits. Good luck with your decision

I have one that I borrowed from a friend and have found it very difficult to use! I am going to give it another try tomorrow at the cider mill. I used the sling exclusively w/Noah. He loved it. With Asher, he only likes the sling to sleep or nurse in. Otherwise he LOVES the Baby Bjorn. However, that is SO painful on my shoulders. In fact, after going grocery shopping with him in it today, I have a pulled muscle
OUCH!
