I vaccinate my children for a number of reasons but I in no way believe the establishment when they tell me that the vaccinations are 100% safe. I just feel that for the most part the good outweighs the bad.

I got the quote below from a baby website and it irritates and angers me so much. Talk about pacifying and lying to the uninformed and keeping up the "talk" regardless of the damages.

Question: If vaccines made with mercury are safe, why are we now making new ones without it.

Paul Offit, M.D.: Because we can. Manufacturers have used mercury in vaccines and other drugs since the 1930s as a preservative to prevent contamination, but we now have alternative preservatives that work just as well. So although no children have ever received toxic amounts of mercury from vaccines, the U.S. government considers it unnecessary for children to get any mercury at all from these shots and has called for drug companies to make new vaccines without it.

The mercury in vaccines has become an issue in recent years because of the growing number of shots that children receive. The concern is that the amount of mercury that a baby may get from all currently recommended vaccines and other sources (such as breast milk or food) may now be close to the acceptable limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency. But you should know that this acceptable limit includes a significant "safety cushion." In other words, it's set far below the amount of mercury known to be harmful. (Mercury can accumulate in the body; at very high levels, it can damage the brain and kidneys.)

How can you tell if your child is getting the new mercury-free vaccines? The mercury-free vaccines have now been available for at least a year, and it's unlikely that there are any of the old versions left in doctor's offices. If you're concerned about this, ask your doctor which version she's using. Even if the new vaccines have not reached your area, though, you're better off getting the old ones than waiting. The risk of delaying vaccination and leaving your child vulnerable to deadly diseases is still exponentially higher than the risk of exposing him to a tiny amount of mercury.

Nevermind that mercury settles and if your child gets the bottom of the bottle they are getting almost straight mercury.

I went to a seminar on vax's a while ago. My doula mentioned it and thought it was anti-vax, but ended up being very pro-vax. The doctor talking went on and on about how safe they were, how much testing was done and such. When he opened up for quesitons, I asked about the DTP -> DTaP... if they were so safe, why did they have to change that? He said that the DTP caused high fevers in children, and that wasn't a great idea. The DTaP fixed that, but it wasn't really a safety issue. Whatever. :

paul offit works for one of vax manufacturers. he has every reason in the world (ahem $$$$) to say what he does.
makes me sick. also, i like he mentions breastmilk above all the bajillions of other possible sources of mercury. maybe the formula manufacturers slipped him some $$ too. i cant even go to sites like parenting.com, they make me hurl. and make me furious.

OK, this isn't a board I usually even visit because I just know I'm going to get flamed, but...

Let's be fair here. This man does not say the vaccines are 100% safe. In fact, I've never read any medical site that makes that claim. Even the very "mainstream" literature doesn't say that. They acknowledge that there is a small risk from the vaccine. And, statistically, it is a SMALL risk. If lots of people don't vaccinate, the risk of your child catching and suffering from a disease get larger. You can choose to take that risk for your child or not. And if you make an informed choice, regardless of what it is, you should feel good about your choice. But two people can look at exactly the same data and come to two different conclusions, based on their understanding and comfort level with the risks reported. Its sort of like the stock market -- what you do depends on how you feel about the different risks. There are right and wrong decisions for YOUR family, but I do not believe there is one right answer for everyone.

The man is a corporate shill of the worst sort. He has a clear conflict of interest. I wouldn't trust anything he says as far as I can spit.

why did he write that the amounts were tiny? I mean that's a complete lie!! I can't remember the exact numbers but I have read it in numerous places that the amount in one shot is way over the maximum safe amount (for one day) set by the government.

Just read books by Paul Offitt and you'll be sickened. HE is quoted in a book I own-given to me by a very pro vax relative-that Mercury is everywhere and is washed out of our systems very easily. He also says that you shouldn't question your Docs too much cause the yare smarter than you (paraphrasing of course). He was on tv here recently and said that "Vaccines are safer than multivitamins." He says many absurd things. He also does not live far from me, and having someone so ignorant and full of power near me frightens me when my children are ill, as my DD has been in the hospital he works at.
