I found a few conflicting websites regarding this, but this is the page I wanted to print out and give to him.

http://www.fathermag.com/health/circ/acs/

Any advice on how to go about it, or better sources to show him? I just don't want him propagating the myth.

I'm also trying to find a good link for fatality rates for circ's done in hospital conditions in the US. Not having much luck with google.

I think my best response would be 'I thought OBs dealt w/pregnant women and oncologists dealt w/cancer and urologists deal with the penis- how interesting you're up on the latest research, please direct me to your resources'

I think the important detail is the rate of penile cancer. I mean, one's odds of death or illness from any number of other causes are orders of magnitude higher than one's odds of having penile cancer, regardless of circ status. Furthermore, would he encourage prophylactic mastectomies for all women to prevent breast CA? (Thus preventing 1 in 8 women from getting breast cancer, versus 1 in 200,000 men getting penile cancer.)

I'd cut & paste just the ACS letter & give it to him, with whatever schpiel you want to say (I'd say the bit above) and go from there.

In fact a man is at least twice as likely to contract breast cancer than penile.

Yet, inexplicably, male nipples are not removed at birth.

In the United States, men who are circumcised in childhood have a lower rate of penile cancer. It's not known whether this is due to the absence of the foreskin or other lifestyle factors. Recent studies have found that circumcised men are less likely to be infected with HPV, even after this risk is adjusted for differences in sexual behavior. Other studies suggest that circumcision may reduce the risk of more invasive forms of penile cancer. A recent study reported that uncircumcised men who had phimosis in the past were at increased risk of developing penile cancer. Penile cancer risk was not increased among uncircumcised men without phimosis.

Hmmmmmm.
Only women with breasts get breast cancer but we don't do preventitive mastectomies at birth. Or cervix. Or testicles. Or.....Or.....Or......
What a jerk.
Penile cancer is so rare it's like hens teeth.Certainly not a reason for genital mutilation. The strongest risk fact or for penile cancer is smoking. And only really really old men get it. Did I mention it's extremely rare?
Did I mention he's a jerk? What else does he like to cut without a reason? have you asked him about his views on episiotomy? Caesarean section?
Sorry for being so blunt.

In Finland male newborns are extremely rarely circumcised due to non- medical reasons. Penile cancer incidence in Finland is extremely rare - less than 0.5 per 100 000 person-years. Age-adjusted mortality in penile cancer is one per million person years. According to Finnish experienca, parents decision not to circumcise their male children protects the men from penile cancer.

Our family doctor told us the same thing when arguing why we should circumsize. Unfortunetly we listened to him.
I think it would be great if you could get this doctor information and I will give some to mine as well and we can get them both to stop.

Yeah, I would definately ask him some questions! If he thinks that about penises, who knows what he might think about other things in childbirth. Does he recommend all women breastfeed for at least 7 years too?? lol (risks of getting breast cancer go down to almost nothing after you have breastfed for 7 years)

Interesting, I've never heard that! Does that mean 7 straight years or just 7 years total? I plan on having several kids so I might hit that!

DH said that the only thing doctors remember is what they were taught in school. I've found that to be true quite often. It does strike me as odd though, that someone with zero medical training (me) can so often find info that the doc's whose job it is to know, can't be bothered to look up.

Another thing I didn't realize was that OB's did the circ's, (at least here) not peds which I think is quite odd.

Thanks for all the links! I'm going to print out a few different sources so he can't just shrug it off. One doc at a time, HelloKitty... one doc at a time! If we don't try it will never change.

I've heard the risk of breast cancer decreases substantially after 2 years of nursing-- any combination of 2 years.

What I remember about that is people thought the ACS and other Breast Cancer websites should promote bf'ing for 2 years as one of the things to do as a preventative since they promoted other things that helped- but b'fing helped even more statistically.

7 years would probably deter a lot of people from even trying or thinking of it as possible. Like me, I hope to have a 2nd- but I'm not sure about 3 1/2 years of nursing, although at this rate with Josh, I wonder if he will be off the breast by college- LMAO!

I wish I could find the stats on this, but not tonight.

You can get cancer anywhere, to include the glans penis, which isn't removed during a circ (at least never on purpose.)

so yeah, it's possible to get penile cancer after being circumcised. What a dimwit that doc is.

Circ might reduce the miniscule risk, but it's still a dumb reason to do something so invasive.
