My pediatrician asked me to email her some links about circ stats. She is firmly anti-circ, but had been (unbeknownst to me) quoting that 70% of boys are circumcised.

Here is the email I sent her, does it look okay to you?

Here's a link about the statistics from the National Hospital Discharge Survey
http://www.cirp.org/library/statistics/USA/

Here's one from Bollinger
http://www.cirp.org/library/statistics/bollinger2004/

Here's a link to some pamphlets you can print off to give to your patients. I can't tell you how many moms have said to me that no one told them that it was okay NOT to circumcise. No one told them it didn't have to be done. Frankly, I think that pediatricians should play an active role in Informed Consent, for no other reason than to protect themselves legally. I'm sure that you do that, but lots don't. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.nocirc.org/ About 1/3 of the way down the page, it says "Pamphlets for Parents and Professionals" and then they are listed under there.

Also, here's a link I thought you might like:
It's for Doctors Opposing Circumcision - http://www.doctorsopposingcircumcision.org/DOC/

Here's a link to an online documentary (that can also be purchased as a DVD or video, if anyone wants to) titled "Whose Body, Whose Rights? Examining the Ethics and the Human Rights Issue of Infant Male Circumcision" http://www.circumcisionvideos.com/onlinewbwr.htm

Personally, I think this should be required viewing for anyone who wants to circumcise their baby. But, I'm a bit of an activist, I'll admit

So, have I overloaded you with information again? Sorry about that, I guess I'm just a tad long-winded

I think it looks fine.

Remember, she may indeed see 70% of boys circed in her practice....depending on the part of the country you're in and how high the rates are in your local area.

Also, even if 50% of newborns are escaping the knife each year, it's going to take a loooooooong time for the overall numbers of boys under 18 who are intact to increase.

You could explicitly ask her to inform expectant parents when they come in for an interview of the risks and harms of circ. The time to educate parents is when they are expecting the baby, not when they come in for the postpartum visit.

Yay for you for educating her further!

I think you are correct.

Luckily we live in the West (Utah) and the western rates in all studies are pretty low.

You could also get her a copy of the pamphlet on circ and Mormonism - see the link here: http://www.coloradonocirc.org/pamphlets.php

That would be a great one for her to distribute, I bet.
