Actually, heavy bleeding causes another kind of infection - it's from constant sloughing and other stuff. I'm not sure what it's called, but a gyno once said you can get a mild constant infection from it.

Blood clots also smell grody.

You can try taking apple cider vinegar or vitamin E daily (200-400 UI is ok) to thin out your blood a little. It also reduces your cramps, any ovarian cysts, and clots.

The caveat is that your blood is thinner, so you may have runnier blood (so have a good tampon or good coverage on a pad), but you will notice a general feeling of health. It may keep your blood free flowing instead of stagnant. When blood dries or clumps it just smells more.

It's the blood itself that smells, as far as I know. Blood stinks. that's pretty much all there is to it.

At least with a cup, the stinky blood is collected somewhere that other people can't smell it, like they sometimes can with a pad.
