Hi ladies, I'm starting my own thread, finally.

For now, it's just a placeholder. I will be back later tonight or tomorrow afternoon to flesh it out. There is a lot of backstory and a lot of stuff we've already tried.

Right now, we've gone paleo (no dairy, soy, grains incl corn, legumes incl peanuts, peas & green beans, no starchy veggies eg potatoes, yams, tapioca), with the additional restriction of no garlic and very specific tree nuts (right now, just almonds) given my cashew allergy (and xcon concerns). Also, we're doing duck eggs but not hen eggs. I'm hoping to source some truly free-range hens and see if we can do those.

Stay tuned.

I'm wondering... is this a detox related thing? or a too much b6 thing? or coincidental to the pork from last night? or related to the full paleo (we were fully paleo yesterday save for a few servings of green peas)? where is that tearing your hair out smilie again???
The official "Tolerable Upper Intake Level" of B6 for a 1-3yo is 30mg, for a 4-8yo, it's 40mg. For a nursing mama, it's 100mg. I was taking 200-300mg/day for months before I got to tolerance levels.

Are you guys sulfur sensitive? If you've been REALLY low on sulfate, then turning that process on with B6 could cause a detox reaction.

I'm glad I'm not actually behind yet.

I was/am looking forward to paleo meal ideas, so let me share a few links I've gotten from people, just in case any are new to you (I think you'll need to weed through a bit for your other limitations, but still...).
http://www.cavemanfood.blogspot.com/ (that's looking tasty so far)
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/category/recipes/ (I'm sure you've already seen this one)
http://paleofood.com/ (just started looking here)

And not sure if you own The Garden of Eating, it was a rec I got ages ago because it's dairy and grain free (at the time I thought, well, I can just add in GF grains, never dreaming I'd go down this road).

Okay, back to meal-planning for me. Hope to hear the whole story soon.

eta: I am finding really interesting recipes here too...
http://www.sonofgrok.com/2009/03/rec...ana-nut-bites/

You probably know all these sites already, I am sure I am behind, but I'm getting excited actually seeing interesting, tasty food! I have been in an ugly rut, it's been pretty pathetic (for, say, 9 months now!).

Oh my. This is long. I'm trying to include anything I think could be relevant. Which is like, my entire life history. Sorry. I have a hard time with brevity.

I am a 30wk preemie, born in 1980. Clinically dead when born. Given a very low survival rate with a poor prognosis. Here I am, 28yrs later, not dead and not mentally retarded. Yay for me.

As a result, I was formula fed from day one (well, tube fed from day one, until I could take a bottle). I had repeat thrush and pneumonia as a baby, but other than that I was a pretty healthy kid. No apparent allergies, outside of seasonal stuff as I got older. No ear infections. No rashes other than "heat rash" because I "drooled a lot" and drool got caught in my fat rolls. (My mom is so not a sentimental memory recaller.
)

In the past few days (while mentally composing this history) I remembered that I had fillings as a child, in my baby teeth. At least one. I'm pretty sure it was amalgam (was there another choice 20yrs ago?). I had another when I was 12 or 13 in an adult molar, but it fell out and wasn't replaced (long story; eventually lost that tooth). I have fillings now, but they are composites. No amalgam.

Back into my teens, I remember that I constantly had stomach aches and was also an exceedingly gassy child/teen/adult pre-ED. I always had highly irregular BMs - usually stuck in a constipation/diarrhea cycle. As a child, I was given mineral oil to "soften" my poop so I could go without bleeding. When I went dairy-free for good 2yrs ago, I suddenly was regular as could be.

I also had predictable sinus issues at the changing of the seasons - spring & fall.

I am allergic to several abx and to birds (to the point where my eyes would start to swell shut if I was around one/handled one for too long).

When I was 10 or 11, I had a SERIOUS rxn to poison ivy. Ended up on steroids. It was miserable. It just wouldn't clear on its own and got worse and worse.

When I was 20, I developed a "spontaneous" allergy to cashews & pistachios. I take no chances with mangoes. The rxn is serious hives all over the entire surface of both hands. Lasts about a week. Is excrutiating. Before I started avoiding all nuts for fear of xcon, I had a couple of mislabeled stuff. The rxn escalated each time, with the last time including lip/tongue/face tingling. The last rxn was from taking one bite of something before realizing it had cashews in it and then spitting it out. I am scared of cashews!

In hindsight the cashew allergy is pretty obvious, given the severity of my poison ivy rxn.

I didn't start my period until a few months before I turned 14. I was a late bloomer, and then I "blossomed" (breast, hips, thighs) overnight. And I have the lovely stretchmarks to prove it.

Depression starting in teens, significantly worsened in college. Was in a long-term relationship with an emotionally abusive man. Ate like crap. Went on BCPs. Gained weight. Tried various meds for depression and bipolar. Brief hospitalization when I was 21 for finally breaking down and trying to kill myself. Various diagnoses: depression, bipolar, OCD, borderline. Blah blah blah.

Always had seemingly high blood pressure outside of pregnancy - around 135/85. [Now it's always in the 110/70 range or so.]

Anyway, so clearly, I've had issues for awhile, and didn't know exactly how bad and why.

Lily was born when I was 24. I had abx during labor (w/o my permission). Lily had a 36hr course of abx at birth. She was born vaginally at 41w4d after being induced the day before. 9lbs 13oz; 22in.

We successfully decline vaxes in hospital, but were harassed into them at the doctor's office. She's had all the vaxes through 6m. Plus the rest of the series through 15m, minus chicken pox and minus MMR.

She was/is breastfeed without formula. Started solids early - around 4m - based on misinformation and bad advice. She was a big baby and hit 18lbs & 26in by 4m. She did poorly on them, so was not on them regularly at all until she could get food from a plate to her mouth by herself (6 or 7 or 8ish months?). We started with rice cereal and bananas. Quickly abandoned that. Did oatmeal for a bit. Then saw the light and just let her eat little bits here and there of whatever we were eating. Started yogurt & cheese at 7 or 8m.

VERY fussy "colicy" baby. Wouldn't sleep anywhere but on me, on the breast. Nursed constantly. Lived in the sling. Green, mucousy diapers as a rule.

We suspected dairy very early. I was actually dairy-free when she was 3wks to 3m old. We reintro'ed dairy w/o an issue, we thought (things were better, but not "solved" when I was off it. Things didn't get monstrously worse when I went back on...)

Dairy and cats are her only IgE allergy, per the tests (blood & SPT) thus far. She was borderline on the IgG test for garlic, various beans, turmeric & poppy seeds.

We pursued allergy testing because she developed eczema when she was 20ish months old. Then she got the croup (scary not breathing, treated with steroids). Then she had a mystery fever in the 104 range that was still raging after 4 days, so we took her to urgent care and we were given abx for her.
The croup and the fever went away but eczema lingered. Ebbed and flowed. Pretty much as low as it's ever been now.

Aevryn was born when I was 26. She was born at home a few days before her "due" date. No complications. 9lbs 10oz. 21.5 in. No vax. Has never been exposed to dairy via breast milk. Has never eaten gluten directly. Had yucky green, mucous diapers for along time, too. Finally figured soy as her trigger when she was 5m old. She was also a big baby and hit 20lbs/26in by 4m at the latest. Started solids here and there whenever she could grab food off a plate and get it into her mouth. 6 or 7 or 8 or more months? Never was a big fan of food; still isn't, unless it's carbs or chicken. (Looooves "chips": potato, veggie, corn, or rice crackers. if it's crispy, salty & deep fried, she will love it.)

I had major rage issues after lily's birth and even worse after aevryn's. They are resolved now, but only with vit supp, i believe.

I have pretty much zero short term memory. My long term memory is spotty, depending on which period of my life/specific events I'm trying to recall.

I have a crazy sweet tooth, especially chocolate. I've never understood someone who would willingly choose fruit desserts if a chocolate version was available. I have no will power or self-control. I will eat until a bag or package is gone/empty.

I gained 56lbs with Lily. I gained 35lbs with Aev, but started 5lbs heavier. Lost baby weight easily with Lily - all of it plus 2lbs by 4m PP. I had a harder time losing Aev's weight. 10lbs stuck around until we did the ED. From Nov 1, 07 till when I stopped losing around Christmas 08, I lost 43 lbs. (Around 30 less than I'd been carrying for almost a decade.) I'm within 5lbs of that now.

I got insane stretch marks with Lily starting around 30wks. Didn't notice any with Aev at the time, but now I see I got them in my legs and thighs, whereas Lily's were tummy, breast and butt. I took a prenatal until 14wks with Lily. I stopped b/c it made me constipated for a week at a time. That was miserable. I didn't take prenatals with Aev, though I did to pregnancy tea (nettles/RRL). I took B vits to lengthen my LP so I could conceive her while nursing Lily.

As of now, 23m PP, I have not seen a return of my period since Aev was born. But, she still nurses 2-3x/night and LOTS during the day. Lily is back to nursing about once a day.

Our current regime is:
  • nettle tea w/milk thistle
  • water kefir
  • ferments
  • slightly less than bowel tolerance SA, broken into 2 or 3 doses over the
    day
  • sublingual methyl-whatever B12, CLO, zinc & mag (at separate times)
  • add to that for just me: biotin & B6; Betaine with meals.
As I said before, we are now paleo and seeing where that takes us. I definitely have gluten issues. One pretzel a few months after we went GF gave me diarrhea and made me temporarily gain 5lbs for a few days. I've had diarrhea from xcon to the bulk bins BW flour I was buying (right next to the barley). We did FAILSAFE before and we were 100% clear of rxns (beh & skin & GI) for the first time in forever. We could handle fairly high levels of sals, but fell apart from amines.

We started seeing the chiropractor in early January. I am so pleased with our progress and am excited to keep up with it. I know that it's helping with detox.

I'm trying to think if I forgot anything in my novel here. This is why I was hesitant to start a thread. I'm so lost I don't know where to start and how to cull what's relevant and what's not.

I guess my focus here is to help figure out what detox stuff is going on. What pathways are clogged and how do I help them?

We are sulfur-sensitive in that we get super smelly gassy with onions, garlic, etc. I also crave garlic intensely but haven't had any in almost 2yrs.

Caffeine affects me quickly and severely so I steer clear.

I get the gross asparagus pee smell.

I off and on fail the beet pee test. Sometimes more dramatically than others, despite eating ferments, drinking kefir and taking Betaine.

Okay, I promised DH I'd go watch Terminator with him like 15 minutes ago. I have written more than enough for now, I know.

Are you noticing detox reactions from the betaine? Is that betaine HCl? Are you doing it for the HCl or for the betaine?

The amine sensitivity says methylation to me. Which means folate/B12 and/or betaine. The betaine path is stimulated by phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine. Are you getting either of those? Impaired methylation could also explain the histamine reactions (and the seasonal allergies?) Is a short LP a high estrogen thing? Cause then that could be methylation too.

The caffeine thing is slow phase 1 detox.

I'm supposed to be in bed already, so just a couple things jump out at me.

Zinc. Zinc. Zinc. (how much/how long have you supplemented? Just curious, glad you're working on it, but maybe this has been an issue since your childhood?)
--stretch marks
--hormonal BC pills
--digestive issues (many causes, and maybe yours has been off always? sounds like you've got a good approach with cutting out grains--are you considering something like SCD at some point?)
--depression (many depressed people are high in copper and low in zinc
)
--I think the B6 rec for short LP is also zinc related, and have you considered adrenals? With the progesterone-adrenals being chemically related, and I know I'm pathetically low on both.

Chocolate and magnesium? Have you supp'd mag, or done the epsom salt taste test? (just re-read, saw it in your list of supps)
http://www.psha-inc.com/guai-support/sf/TasteTests.htm

One of Panserbjorne's old posts was about magnesium also being important for digestion, and that stuck with me because DH and my daughter both need a lot more mag than my son and I and their digestion is weaker.

Okay, bedtime for me. DH and I decided today that it would be pathetic if we get to next fall/winter and we've just been too lazy to put in the work to get better. We are pretty clear on what our issues are, and what to work on, we just need to do the work (or in this case, sleep).

I don't know if I'm experiencing detox rxn from the betaine. Let me put two and two together here... I always remember with dinner and I seem to get bloated and have heartburn or burping after dinner these days. I don't always remember with lunch or breakfast. I was trying to take it whenever I had meat or grains. Would that be a detox rxn or just a plain old rxn? It is betaine HCl with Pepsin. 324mg Betaine HCl and 39mg Pepsin. And I'm taking it both for the stomach acid (failing pink pee test constantly lately) and for the betaine for opening/assisting pathways.

The amine sensitivity says methylation to me. Which means folate/B12 and/or betaine. The betaine path is stimulated by phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine. Are you getting either of those?

I don't know what the source of either of those are... A quick google search says phosphatidylserine is from soy (out), chicken, egg yolks and liver. We eat chicken a lot, both white and dark meat. Have started eating duck eggs but not a lot since I can only get about a dozen a week. We've really been trying to include liver in at least one meal a day lately. phosphatidylcholine is apparently found in liver, soy, egg yolks, and cauliflower & lettuce. So, this is a good indication to keep up with our liver and egg yolks!

Impaired methylation could also explain the histamine reactions (and the seasonal allergies?) Is a short LP a high estrogen thing? Cause then that could be methylation too.

Interestingly enough, going off of dairy and gluten seems to have kiboshed my major seasonal allergies. I barely notice them anymore the last few season changes. I do have high histamine, I believe, since rubbing a raw tomato on my skin turns it red and VERY itchy, fire-y. I don't get this from cooked tomatoes, and I don't seem to have a GI reaction from either raw or cooked tomatoes.

I thought that short LP was a low progesterone issue, but since pro/estrogen are linked, I think that means the same thing. I thought it was because I was nursing that my cycles were wacked, but then I started taking a B-50 complex and I conceived A the next cycle or two after trying for awhile...

The caffeine thing is slow phase 1 detox.
I thought so, per the tuberose article. I need to reread it to figure out what I need to do to address that.

we've been supplementing for about two months or so. 50mg as amino acid chelate. Incidentally, I've been giving Lily 1/4 of a tablet ~12.5mg/day.

--digestive issues (many causes, and maybe yours has been off always? sounds like you've got a good approach with cutting out grains--are you considering something like SCD at some point?)

yes. off always. for as long as i can remember, back into early elementary school. got particularly bad in high school and college. Used to have to miss class or call in sick to work b/c I had diarrhea.

we are doing paleo now just to get used to no grains. I think if I could get the kids on board the SCD I would do it. except for the yogurt thing. I suppose we could make our own coconut or almond milk yogurt, but that seems like... a lot of work.
I was also looking at GAPS. For right now, I don't want to have to follow such a regimented/strict diet. We're looking to see an ND here soon, and I was going to chat with him and see what we could figure out together...

--depression (many depressed people are high in copper and low in zinc
)
after remembering about my childhood amalgams (and correlating them to the fact that my enviro allergies and my GI problems escalated around the time the fillings fell out each time...) we're going to do the hair test for me and for DD1. depending on what comes back, we might do DH & DD2. I need to go search for the yahoo group discount link thingy.

--I think the B6 rec for short LP is also zinc related, and have you considered adrenals? With the progesterone-adrenals being chemically related, and I know I'm pathetically low on both.

i *have* considered adrenals. especially since my "salt to taste" levels are pretty high. (they used to be low, i couldn't stand salt on anything. but then again, my mom served packaged side dishes, and that's what I also cooked with at first on my own, so maybe that was it...) however, i am completely overwhelmed by the info and have no idea where to start. again, I was hoping a consult with our ND would lead me toward the proper path.

Chocolate and magnesium?

yes. I am taking 500mg magnesium (as magnesium amino acid chelate, magnesium oxide). probably for the last few weeks. For a month and a half prior to that, I was taking 250mg. We were also taking calcium in two 500mg doses for a couple months, but now I'm paranoid about hypercalcemia, so we're just doing nettles and food sources of Ca.
I really appreciate everyone reading and responding. I feel so lost sometimes. It's nice to talk with other people who at least understand where I'm coming from.

I am still not supposed to be sitting here, have so much to do today! My son's birthday is tomorrow, and it's Easter and all the stores will be closed tomorrow (I expect, they didn't close in Seattle when I lived there, but this is Texas)....

Um, consider breaking up the zinc into 2 doses for better absorption (still not with lots of calcium).

The high-salt, low-salt thing can be stages of adrenal issues, whoMe helped me see that in my past, my family always hated too much salt, now I get why.

I think there's gotta be a way to pick the best foods from SCD and GAPS (cause I don't want to add in dairy either, not yet, eventually but not now), to figure out a good probiotic source and choose which intro method is best (though I'm not sure we'll start with the intro anyway). It does seem restrictive, but I'm doing the same approach, cut out grains and legumes now and get used to that, and then likely transition.

Good to do the hair test. It is conceivable, though, that just the extra you were exposed to, given your gut was already messed up, caused candida flares then and made you feel bad, but it's not truly an issue of the mercury building up so much over time. Lots of good things to be said from supporting detoxification and getting rid of whatever metals you _have_ accumulated, I think that can be great for anyone, but I'm not sure it's a slam-dunk yet that you're dealing with a chronic heavy metal toxicity issue.

Call Direct Lab Services (ph# on their website, right on the front in big font) and tell them that you're a member of the autism-mercury yahoo group and you want the Hair Elements test (not the Toxic Hair Exposure Profile). I think $83-ish.

Ok, need to run, much to do, not as much time.

A detox reaction would be more likely to be delayed by a day or two, and I doubt it would involve digestion like that.

So it sounds like maybe the HCl isn't enough? And maybe digestive enzymes in addition would be helpful? Or maybe increase the HCl? And since it definitely sounds like HCl is low, B12 is almost certainly low - but you're supping that already. Hmm... Is the liver every day a new thing? How do you think you're doing on folate?

i think i've seen an improvement with digestive enzymes in the past. they are just kind of expensive... the liver everyday is new to this week. we had liver 3 days running and then none yesterday or today. livers are soaking in lemon juice right now, though...
otherwise, we're probably not even hitting RDA. or just barely.
getting weird error messages. maybe it will work this time?

Before I forget, for B12, a sublingual supp isn't unreasonable. If you're low, for whatever reason, getting back to a good level can be tough with food, even foods that are otherwise good sources. I mean--for most folks, food would be fine, and I definitely don't plan to be on a B12 supp forever (while I'm not so sure about zinc) but it's an ok one to supp IMO.

Ok, back to this...

Have you seen graphs of the stages of adrenal fatigue? Let me link that...
http://www.chronicfatigue.org/ASI%201%20.html

A lot of folks start to feel seriously unwell, and seek help, around stage 5. I think I'm still there, and it's a seriously-craving-salt part of the process. But back when I was in, say, stage 3, my aldosterone was probably quite different (look through all the graphs and you'll see that once your adrenals start maladapting, they produce extra cortisol for a while, then they get too tired and start under-producing, and aldosterone is part of this, and it's involved in how our bodies hold onto sodium). It's not critical now, except that you realize that, if you like things saltier than most people, that's probably a real need. At the moment, I am actually chugging a small amount of water with a lot of salt each morning, followed by a normal amount of water (I can't do a whole glass of salty water, it's just too icky--but I think I need the extra salt, I'm not salting my food enough during the day). So listen to your body--it helps with feeling better, sodium is important for getting nutrients in and out of cells properly.

Um, metals. Metals passing through the digestive tract are very irritating, I think they change the pH, and I know they promote a weird, messed up bacterial balance. Past few months I've been doing this as I chelate, my gut is more messed up now than it's ever been before. So if you ingested lots of extra metals at the time of the dental work, it could've just been swallowing them and then excreting what actually got into your bloodstream that pushed your gut even more out of whack, and then took a while to normalize. That could happen to most folks, I think, without requiring long-term mercury toxicity.

Ella'smom is right, I should've mentioned there's some weirdness with nursing moms and hair tests. Now, sometimes they're helpful, like chlobo's--crazy high copper and lead don't happen by accident. But when something like that isn't the problem, then subtleties seem to be lost (regular minerals seem to be different with nursing moms, and I don't know if there's any rhyme or reason to how). But for the kids, good to look into.

I figure you're ahead of me on the diet front! We're easing into the paleo thing, I'm going to use up a some of our remaining grains (some probably more for me and the kids during the day, with leftover dinner for lunch for DH), but I've decided to lean on potatoes a bit for the transition. Sort of like leaning on those pre-made GF breads, before I learned to make my own and then decided to do without. That's another reason I think it'll be fall (and maybe after DH's birthday in August) when we (if we) transition for real into SCD or GAPS. I need to buy both books, but if the allowed foods are the same except for the dairy issue, then it's easier, and maybe we'll start like SCD but include some foods that SCD just doesn't emphasize as much, like homemade stock and try to make extra kimchee juice for the probiotics. Not sure yet, but it seems doable--though maybe that's cause it's half a year away, not an issue for next week.

I just realized my battery is about to die. Ack. I will come back and reply to Ellasmom & Tanya later.

I just wanted to post that I've had asparagus two days in a row now without the stinky asparagus pee! Just last week, I had the stinky pee within an hour of eating it. This is good? I hope!!

Difference between then & now: methyl sublingual B12 instead of the other; B6 & Biotin. Yay!

cool! If it's the B6, that would at least fit with the other sulfoxidation stuff...

update...

lately, my hips have been clicky so i was thinking i needed to up my sulfur intake. i was eating a lot of onions prior to the joint crackliness, but they were making me super gassy (and in retrospect, were causing some sciatica/arthritis type hip pain) so i stopped. today we had hard boiled hen's eggs for lunch. i had 1.5 eggs about and within an hour, i was having sulfur-tasting burps, i was gassy and my hip hurt.

i'm confused. i thought sulfur foods were supposed to HELP with joint pain and not cause it.

shannon, you just posted something to the failsafe list about sulfites/sulfates and arthritis that i have to go and dig out of my trash bin and re-read now.

so, i think there is something going on here (clearly) where i'm not processing sulfur properly. i just need to figure out how to "fix" that...

any suggestions?

Tuberose says these are needed for proper sulfation:

Quote:
Sulfation: Molybdenum, Cysteine and precursor (Methionine), Co-factors (B-12, Folic Acid, Methyl Donors, Magnesium, B-6/P-5-P), MSM
I also seem to remember reading something about niacin/B3 being needed for production of the SUOX enzyme, but don't quote me on that (so to speak).

Sounds like maybe broken sulfoxidation? That would call for molybdenum, B6, and rereading the sulfur sensitivity thread.
