I've been having prodromal labor for weeks, and slightly stronger but still irregular contractions on and off all day. I was lying down earlier, got up to go to the bathroom, and some sort of fluid dripped down my legs and onto the floor - I'm honestly not sure if I just peed myself spectacularly or if my water broke. It felt slippery and was clear and didn't have any scent, but I've been chugging water like crazy today and so my urine is also extremely dilute at the moment. I put on a pad and am keeping an eye on it to see if I can figure out which it is - I've been having trouble with bladder control lately so I can't rule out something like the baby punching me in the bladder just as I stood up.

I'm torn between excitement that this might be it and frustration at yet ANOTHER inconclusive sign of something that might or might not actually be labor. And, of course, we're about to get slammed by the blizzard in New England...

When I wasn't sure if my water had broken with my daughter two years ago, I read a suggestion online to lie down for 30 minutes, and then if there is a gush or trickle upon standing back up, it's likely to be your water having broken, rather than having peed yourself.

I'm nearly certain now that it's leaking water - had a couple more trickles in the night that were definitely NOT urine. Contractions seem to be trying to settle into a pattern, so I'm doing what I can to encourage that. I really hope this is it!

Update: I ended up going in to see my midwife today because my blood pressure suddenly went up rather sharply, and while I was there they swabbed to see if I was leaking amniotic fluid. No sign of it, so I'm guessing I had a small leak that healed back up overnight. And once again, the contractions didn't go anywhere.

Now I'm just hoping I go into labor on my own before I develop pre-eclampsia. I'm showing early warning signs of it (high blood pressure, some edema, spilling a bit of protein) and they're running a full panel of tests and consulting with an OB. I should know by Wednesday if an induction is in my future... they're doing everything they can to make sure I get the birth I want -- including a contingency plan that involves transferring me to a hospital an hour away that operates on the midwifery standard of care and looks to be the next best thing to the birth center -- and they're optimistic about keeping it under control enough that they won't have to risk me out.

Keep sending the labor vibes, please - I am so ready to be done with this!

I got sent in this morning for an evaluation with an OB, who decided it's best if we go ahead and induce since my blood pressure keeps climbing. I'm waiting for a room to open up so they can start running pitocin. I really like the OB, and she thinks I probably just need a gentle nudge to kick me into full-on labor. I'm already 3cm and 70-80% effaced, so she's not doing anything except a low dose of pitocin for the induction. And once I get a room, I'll be able to labor in water!

Not what I planned, but... I think it'll still be a good experience. The OB had homebirths with her babies and she said she wants to do everything she can to make this as close to my ideal birth as possible.

Also, YAY. Baby soon!

A birthing room didn't open up until this evening, at which point we were tired enough that we opted to just sleep for the night and start the induction in the morning. Frustrating to spend a whole day sitting around the hospital, but I know being well-rested will greatly improve my chances of making it through a hospital birth without going down the cascade-of-interventions route...

Sleep well mama, take something to help you sleep if you need it, I think part of my labor petering out, and giving into the epidural was due to exhaustion. Sending ELVs your way! YAY!!! Baby soon!!
