Right now I am so annoyed with our health dept and public school system and the drs. I am just steaming. Heres the story.

DD has whooping cough. Shes been out of school for a while. At first I didn't know it was Pertussis. I thought she was having asthma problems again. Took her to the dr, sent her back to school. Coughing fits kept getting worse till the school sent her home because it was scary. So shes been home awhile. The other kids come down with it. The youngest 2 with the classic whoop. Take the kids back tothe dr, dr doesn't think its whooping cough. THey kids had no fits in the office. Just our luck. We haven't slept more than 30 min at a time in the last 2 weeks but they cant have a fit in the office. Doesn't matter anyhow. the 2 youngest have ear infections and bronchitis too. Dr tells us we can culture them but its not very reliable. We probably don't have it anyway and its very expensive.

The school calls again today to see where DD is. Dh makes the mistake of telling them she has whooping cough. The school calls the health dept. The health dept calls us, asks us 100 questions. Tell us we can't take the kids out for 5 days after we start the antibiotics. Remember the dr doesn't even think they have whooping cough. Then they tell us dh and I have to get on antibiotics and the dr will be so kind as to call us in a rx.

So here is my gripe. First off the dr doesn't belive me as their mother that I know what my kids have. In this case its a good thing anyhow. The health dept got to get the dr, who doesn't even think we have whooping cough, to give us a rx! WTH?! They have way too much power. And there is no reliable way to confirm or deny that a person has whooping cough. Then I would like to know how the heck can they have confirmed cases as compared to being just rumored or suspected? And the thing that really bothers me is that the school has on file who is vaxed and who isn't. they are the ones who called the health dept, not the dr...which I think is totally overstepping bounds. The health dept calls us and the first thing they ask is why we aren't vaxed. You know when my brother had mumps, for which btw he was vaxed for, he was out of school and the health dept never called about that. I think because he was vaxed and they purposely don't want to know about the vaxed population getting vax preventable diseases. Conspiracy theory? Coincidence?

So now I need info. I know my kids have whooping cough. Will an antibiotic make them not contagious? We have been out everywhere before today. Will staying in the house for 5 days really do anything? The youngest 2 I don't have too much of a problem giving an antibiotic to since they have other infections. Me and dh taking it is absurd though.

Any tips on dealing with the health dept, the school, the drs office? this whole thing is just stupid.

Whooping Cough in Adults has been called the "one hundred day cough", so if you know anyone who has been hacking away for three months, that is whooping cough.

according to these links, there is a way to test for it.. apparently a culture that tests for the whooping cough bacteria--takes like 5 days to get the results. Wonder why your doctor didn't test?
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/...opingcough.htm
another (possibly) informative link:
http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/DS/00445.html

I hope that you and your children get feeling better from all this...because it surely is taking such a toll on you as well. Sorry you have to deal with the Health dept on top of it all.
Take care,

Culture is not a reliable form of diagnosis. Its also very expensive, so it would be silly to get it done. My dr said the health dept might do it for free...yeah I want them even more involved in my life right now.

I went back and re-read all my books: How to raise a healthy child inspite of your dr, Vaccine guide and pertussis.com and all say that antibiotics don't shorten the length of the illness, its only used to make them less contagious. I don't know though if it actually does make them less contagious or they just tell peopl ethat to make them feel better? Anyone know of any clincal info?

I have gotten their fits on film and I am going to email it to my dr to educate him. You know if my kids were homeschooled how would the health dept ever known about the whooping cough? I can see why there is so much pressure to do things the mainstream way, they can keep tabs on people better.

Our pertussis experience was so much different. It sucks theat they are putting you through all of this

Dd caught it in October, i'd say. In january we took her to a doctor for it. I told them what I thought it was, she never whooped. They tested. The doctor and all the nurses were awesome. Dh wanted a chest xray to rule out anything else and even though I was against this I decided it waould make him feel better.

They stuck these three swabs up her nose. She handled them all fine. She was laughing and joking and asking for a popcicle a few minutes later.

Then, they tell us 11 days for the culture to come back. About 14 days later they call us and say the first two swabs are back and negative. they say don't worry about the third.

Of course, a month after that dd is recovered. We get another call. the third one was positive . So obvioulsy, you are right cultures are not reliable. They have to report it to the HD too.

I was freaking out thinking I'd get the runaround and 300 questions but the lady who had to call me was sooooo cool! We talked for a long time about other stuff and had great rapport. Then she tells me I have to give her this antibiotic. Here is where I am going with this story. She knows it is dumb and that even if Dylan was still sick it would be useless to give them to her because they don't help it, and by the time the culture has come back it isn't really that contagious anyway. It is most contageousbefore the cough even appears. Naturally, I threw it away, I am sure she suspected so much, but she'd done her job.

When my daughter had a sinus infection months later I took her back to the same doctor and they treated her with celebrity status. She was known as the "pertussis girl."

To get some people off your back you could get the rx for the antibiotics, full it, then flush them.

From Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, & Toxins by Thomas Levy, Md, JD Pertussis is reversable and preventable but dont know if its curable. The doses used in the differant studies mentioned range from 150 - 500 mg of vit C orally. WHich in my mind doesnt sound like very much C comsidering my DD's get a gram + a day.

First thing is that there IS a reliable whooping cough test. It's called Polymerase Chain Reaction:

Using the search this forum, I clicked on Advanced search and typed in Polymerase AND chain. It's okay for me to do that, because I know what to look for. If you've not used the system before, you could type in whooping AND cough, and you'd still come up with the same threads.

I'm going to put here links to threads which might be of the most use to you.

Read them, and see if anything here is of any use:

http://www.mothering.com/discussions...lymerase+Chain

The fact that Jay Gordon said in this thread that the test is unreliable doesn't mean he knows everything:

http://www.mothering.com/discussions...lymerase+Chain

Here's another of use:

http://www.mothering.com/discussions...lymerase+Chain

My kids are on alot more than that of vit c. They drink the emergen c several times a day, take a chewable and oj fortified with vitc and other vits and minerals. I started them on the emergen c as soon as I realized what they had. So they get alot of c.

I just told them we'll keep the kids inside for 5 days and do the antibiotics for that long. Maybe it will kick ds' bronchitis and ds' ear infection. I pray no one gets a yeast infection, like I need that right now.

The health dept really annoyed me. They said, "I don't know why you don't vax, but we have free clinics all the time." So we told them we had religious exemption to which they replied, "Well we just want to make you aware there are free clinics all over the county" Yeah totally ignore what we just said, thanks. They even asked us where we got it from! We told them school :LOL . Which is probably where dd got it because she got it before anyone else.

And you know what really bugs me? On the doors at the drs office is this sign that says over perscribing antibiotics creates antibiotics resistent bacteria. Yet my dr was willing to give me a rx for something he didn't even think I had just because the HD called him. Hes normally really good, hes vegan and pro bfing, and anti circ and dairy and fine with us not vaxing. I guess the hd wields alot of power. Wonder what would have happened if he said no to the antibiotic? Probably would have had the HD shut him down or something equally crazy.

Oh this can not be a coincidence: http://www.azfamily.com/health/news/...28ed25b4d.html

Not sure if you can read that, but headline is: Health dept. declares statewide outbreak of whooping cough

Dated today. Our 4 cases must have put them over the top :LOL

And if you do read the article...it will make you want to scream: "Luckily, was immunized." :

One way to avoid that, if you feel you must use the erythromycin, is to give the children yakult, kefir, probiotic capsules and a good yoghurt. Nothing like the shotgun approach. they just might get a bit of extra gas though.

PLEASE don't flush antibiotics! That can affect many more people than just your child. That water with the antibiotics in it *goes* somewhere, it doesn't just vanish.

yeah, our town periodically has a "toxic waste" collection day for paint, motor oil, pesticides, and Rx meds.

I used to flush expired scripts, but then I saw a thing on the news that said not to. I guess it never occured to me that going in the septic tank was bad. :

I don't think you are really suppose to throw them away either, so what do you do with them? Just curious.

You know I have had a cough for 6 weeks. Started out as a cold. It is mostly gone now except in the mornings. Then I cough up a lung and am fine for the rest of the day. Hrmmmmm.. Makes you wonder. Wish it was gone already.

I hope your family feels better soon.

Oh goodness, gotta love that the 6yo who GOT IT was "luckily immunized". Do they even see how stupid that sounds? LOL

I'm also in AZ, haven't heard anything about this, but I only read the local paper (we are rural). Scary about the health dept!

We did WC in Dec 02. Symptoms were textbook. I think we got it from the nursery at church. I almost never put the kids in nursery, but did for the season so I could sing in the choir. The last month before the Cantata, the lady working the nursery was coughing. She said she'd been coughing since the weather turned, it was just allergies. But about 2-3 weeks later my 2 youngest had WC, and it spread to my older kids who were partially or fully vaxxed. DH and I got coughs too. The youngest, unvaxxed, had it worst, whether it was from being smallest or unvaxxed, who knows.

I used homeopathics, aromatherapy, Vit C and garlic and no one coughed longer than 3-4 weeks. I *so* believe in homeopathics. But you should probably have a homeopath help you get the right remedy.

There were only 2 nights that I really felt like I had to stay up all night in the recliner with the sickest one. I was giving that child the homeopathic remedy every 15 minutes! Onion poultice, too. He was always better during the day and worse at night, and could go for a while without coughing, and then cough so bad he'd vomit. And of course this just had to be the child with the umbilical hernia. I was afraid it would pop!

I wish I could find the thread, but I remember someone explaining a while back that the antibiotics will stop WC from occuring in those who are exposed, but don't have symptoms yet. It doesn't work for those with symptoms because the damage that WC causes to the body is already done by then. Don't quote me on this or think I am endorsing the use of antibiotics, I just remember a thread with that view in it and can't find it because there are so many threads about WC. It made sense when I read it. Maybe someone else will know what I am talking about.

I've been wondering about the claim that vaccination makes the illness milder. Someone I know slightly made this claim in an attempt to convince me that vaccinating children is worth the risk.

Has anyone ever come across a medical study that actually demonstrates "milder" Pertussis following vaccination?

I've heard of studies claiming that measles is milder after vaccination (but it sounds as though by milder they mean atypical, which is NOT a good thing), and ditto chickenpox.

Thanks,
Yeah I heard that too, but seeing my kids and how they each got it differently I tend to think that kids just respond to the illness differently. My one son has such a mild case you can't even tell hes got it. none of my kids were vaxed. When my brother got mumps, for which he was vaxed for, it wasn't any milder he still looked like a blow fish.

Now the school won't allow dd back if she is still coughing. There are like 2 weeks left, I doubt she will be all through coughing before the end of the year. But the thing is that their policy is 3 weeks from start of coughing (which is tomorrow) and the hd said 5 days after the start of antibiotics...which is tomorrow. So why the heck have a policy if they aren't going to follow it anyway. So we had to get the dr to fax the school to say when she can come back.

Oh and before we found out about the WC there was bronchitis going around the school. How much you wanna bet it was WC?
