OK ladies and gents,

here's the deal. I want to know if anyone has any idea what is wrong with my greyhound. On Sunday night on our walk he went ballistic at a dog that was tied up on a front lawn. He did this strange twisty thing to try to get off his lead. I didn't think anything of it at the time but Monday morning he yelped when he got down off the couch and spent the next few days yelping when getting up or down on anything, stairs, car, couch etc.

He is very subdued compared to normal, but I put this down to pain. He is eating as usual, good poops etc. Just this strange pain when he does certain movements. There is no limping, no swelling, no palpable problems when I feel his legs and paws, which he lets me do no problem. We are off to the vet on Monday morning, and my thought is a pinched nerve. I just wondered what others thoughts were? also any alternative therapies that you would recommend if this is the case....acupuncture, chiropractic? I am a little worried as greys are prone to bone cancer......I don't want to loose my fur baby yet. (am probably so overreacting
)

Thanks for listening

I'm sorry - I have no clue or any suggestions for you, but I didn't want to read and not post. I hope you get some answers from your vet. And, though I am bad about this, try not to think of worst-case scenarios. I recently posted about how I was about to swoop my dog up to take him to the vet immediately when he was a wobbly and limping. I realized two minutes later that his foot had just been asleep
. So, I understand the overreacting thing. But, in my experience, it is very very rarely the worst case scenario.

Since it hurts him, I might try limiting how often he needs to go up/down things right now (the car, couch, stairs etc) When he does need to do those things, maybe give him some help by supporting his back end. Slinging a towel underneath his belly near his back legs will give you a quick way to support a bit of his weight when he goes up/down stairs.

Good luck at the appointment and I hope your pup feels all better very soon!

It's monday.. any update from the vet? I'm sure it's just a pulled muscle and a few days RnR will have your pup right as rain.

If you do Xrays and it does show something that looks like cancer you might also want to check for valley fever. The bone leasions in VF look very much like cancer. Was your pup in the southwest at all?

I still think it sounds like a pulled/strained muscle though

I have two greys and one started yelping for no apparent reason. We talked to the vet and he felt around her body and couldn't find anything so he told us to pay more attention to figure out what area of her body was bothering her. Like you, I also feared Osteosarcoma (and I know our vet was concerned as well). I also had a vet friend look at her and she suggested arthritis in her neck. My dogs were born in 2000, so they are kind of middle aged for a big dog, and so that was a possibility. I bought her some special treats at the suggestion of my vet friend (MSM and chondroitin and maybe glucosamine?). However, eventally I ran out of the stuff, we got busy with moving and I didn't get any more. She has been fine and I think she just pulled a muscle in her neck that took some time to heal. That is a good possibility with your dog, given the incident you describe with the other dog and twisting on the lead. I hope that is all it is, and nothing more serious. I am sure they used to get pulled muscles and pinched nerves all the time when they were racing.
