Trooper David C. Brinkerhoff, a member of the force’s elite mobile response team, was shot Wednesday as he and another trooper went into a Catskill-area farmhouse where the suspect had holed up.

“The fatal wound was made by a .223 (caliber) tactical round that was believed to have been fired by an MRT member,” said acting State Police Superintendent ******* Felton.

: Could this story get any sadder? I don't even think the suspect ever meant to shoot a police officer. He was in a "routine traffic stop" driving a stolen minivan, and (IMO) he panicked and shot the first cop, who wasn't seriously injured b/c of his bullet proof vest.

When I heard the next morning that a cop had been killed, and another one shot and badly injured, I felt so sick. I knew the suspect wouldn't live to see the sun go down Wednesday night. When I came home from work and went online, I saw the house he'd been "holed up" in all day, completely surrounded by law enforcement with every kind of weapon imaginable, was completely engulfed in raging flames. This guy was (IMO just from reading about him - I never met him) not such a very bad guy - he did have a criminal record, but it was for a few relatively minor offenses (IMO) like giving alcohol to someone underage (he was only 23 himself and a college student at the time).

My heart aches for the cop who made this mistake, or was responsible in some way for this accident.
