Anyone care to offer up their own experiences?

It doesnt have to be limited to your ped ...it can be from friends/family/media, etc......

not me, but my close friend took her 1 yr old for his 1 yr visit. They told her he needed: varivax, mmr, hep a and flu vaxes. She said ok to the varivax, flu and hep a and said she wanted to wait until 15 months for the mmr. The nurse actually looked at her like she had 4 heads and asked why she'd want to wait. Friend said that giving him 2 shots at once was more than enough, that the schedule for mmr says 12-15 months anyway so he'd still get it in that time frame. The nurse told her that was a ridiculous schedule she has never heard of and they don't do that at that office. Friend was adament about no mmr today and the nurse said....

well, I don't want to scare you (or something along those lines) but I know/have patients that decided to wait on the mmr....then their kids got cancer and they couldn't get the shot. Friend looked at her...again said no to the mmr...then called me lol. She said if her 1 yr old got cancer, she'd have a lot more to be concerned about than if he had gotten his mmr shot

My mother was told she and the baby couldn't leave the hospital without the Hep B vax.
:

My bf's mother (a nurse) told her I HAVE to vax my baby..."with all these illegal immigrants bringing polio and whatnot in..."

And my aunt and grandmother (gm works in a ped office) think my child will die if (s)he doesn't get the chicken pox vaccine.

Wow, AdoptChina...really? I didn't realize the MMR protected against cancer - does the DTaP offer immunity from HIV?

Our ped (nurse practitioner) was very alarmed when I told her I didnt want to vax our kids anymore ...here's what she said

"Is it because of the mercury....because you know they debunked that whole thing" (this was 2 years ago)

Recently I went in for a physical and she tried to sell me on the new combo shot....not sure what's all in it except for tetanus and pertussis. She said that because we were foster parents, it would be good to get it so we can avoid passing it onto them.

I was told at DD's 2nd and LAST ped Appt. that she would DIE if she didn't get the HIB......not get sick from if exposed to...not maybe die if she gets exposed to...but DIE from not getting the vaccine!!!

Oh...this is the same ped that told me the flu shot did not contain mercury anymore (this was 04) I made her go get the vile and insert and showed it to her. I said "either you are lying, or sadly misinformed and therefore will no longer be allowed anywhere near my DD as I dressed her and left the office never to return.

the pediatric resident said this to me after i declined the hep b vaccine for newborn dd:

"we always give the vaccine to a baby when we don't know mom's status. it's for the greater good."

well, said mom was sitting right in front of her, and i told her that not only did i not have hep b, but i have been fully vaccinated for it myself (not knowing better of course...i did it because i thought i had to in order to do my clinical rotations because i'm a healthcare practitioner.)

i told her that i would have my former employer fax in my most recent physical with proof of vaccination and that she would have it in hand in a few minutes. as i reached for my cell phone, she said that it wouldn't be necessary and that it would just be easier to give dd the vax.

at that point i got so upset and angry i didn't know what to say. she must have seen the look of a furious mama bear cross my face, and she retreated hastily.

needless to say we did not let dd out of our sight the entire time we were in the hospital.

i think partially they treated me like crap because i was a homebirth transport, but that is a story for another thread.

Doctor who saw us for a sick visit (not our normal doc),

"I see he is not vaccinated for Chicken Pox. Do you understand that he could die? In my residency I saw children who scratched themselves so bad they got an infection and died. I recommend you let me vax him while you are here."

Me,

"No thank you. But while you're at it do you have a vaccination for mosquito bites?"

What in the WORLD>!>! That is scary!!!!!!!!!

The only real gem that stands out to me is my son's previous ped stating that if I had only seen the effects that some of these diseases had on kids, like children with measles losing limbs, then I would vax.

When my oldest was a baby we had her in Urgent care for a ruptured ear drum and the dr said they like to see kids vaxed because "They get every cold that comes around". Seriously. And I have since heard that from others as well. Apparently its common knowledge that vaxes prevent colds too

DS was 4, unvaxed. Was told he (dr) would call CPS for child medical neglect. I urged him to do what was best for my child and I would do the same.
No one was called, of course.

When I told my sil (who is a nurse) that I felt stupid for allowing DS to get the Hep B shot seeing how he was unlikely to get it, and she looked at me like I was completely stupid and said that Hep B could live on piano keys for two weeks.

I do not want to think of what one would have to do to get Hep B onto a piano key.

Well lets see what I can remember....please take into account this woman has the most abrasive personality of anyone I have had the misfortune to meet.

Lied to me about the last case of Diphtheria (we have not had a case since 1996 in my state, per the governors health report card) She said she saw one last week and it was awful.
: The look on her face was priceless when I pulled out the heath report card, she didn't know it existed.
:

Oh yeah Tetanus will just jump out and infect you, it's every where...Um no duh lady it's only an issue if you do not have proper wound care. She was mad that didn't work.

Ahh the horrible chicken pox, one of the leading causes of death in children don't cha know?

Lied about pertussis in my neighbor state because I just didn't happen to have their report card. I did read her the riot act for that. It was an awful story, so sad and I doubt it was true.

Mercury is not in vaccines it's a horrible rumor, had a fit when I showed her packet inserts.

No child has ever died from a shot. One mention of VAERS put a look of fear on her face. She actually asked me how I knew about that.

Oh yeah I was condemning my child to an unnecessary death from a VPD.

Vaccines are 100% effective on EVERYONE. (we had to look over that package insert again
)

CPS "could" be called. (she said that in such a threating way) I would violate the UA if I typed what I said to her.

Oh guys the CDC pink books are a myth and the CDC really doesn't know the first thing about diseases anyways.

I can not remember what else she spewed before we fired each other, I've never seen someone so mad that I had actual information and was thinking for myself, it was like I broke her ego. She did also try to play a few psychology tricks it was sickening.

Oh I almost forgot I do too much thinking about these things, I should let other people tell me how to take care of my child.

I will be so happy when the switch is final on Dec. 1st. I still have to write a letter of complaint to her office, calling has done no good.

I don't think I will be able to look at a piano without my brain thinking about this thread
