Nasty Sore Throat...Any Remedies?

1406 Views 20 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Jeni_Houston
Hello fellow Mommies!

This morning I woke up with a horrible sore throat and general sickly feeling. Do any of you have any pregnancy-safe home remedies that you love besides Vit C, juice, tea (doing those already)?

Thanks for any advice!

Hot and sour soup from a Chinese restaurant, always helps me clear my sinuses and get rid of "postnasal drip."
This is my favorite...

Warm water (tea temp), fresh lemon juice and preferably raw honey, but pasteurized would be ok, too. Sooo tasty and very soothing. Also really nice if you have a cough!
I've had a nasy post nasal drip sore throat for 3 months now.
Wish I could help, but nothing has worked for me... hopefully someone will have some good ideas!

Hot drinks are good, but GARGLING is even better cuz it gets up in the nooks and crannies. Hot salt water is what seems to work best.
Try the homeopathic remedy Mercurius Vivicus (sp) Has helped me with sore throats in the past.

I like Cold-Eez Zinc lozenges (honey flavor).

Now THIS is some "medical advice" I can get behind....I think I know what I'm having for lunch today.....mmmmmmmmmm......

I was just going to post this morning about the same thing, sinuses and throat, postnasal drip - been fighting it off for 3 days now, but it has taken hold. Fooey. Keep 'em coming, ladies, please!
Another vote for gargling with hot salt water. Make it as hot and as salty as you can stand. It's nasty - but man does it work!

Hope you're feeling better soon!
My ND once gave me a tincture called "hemp tincture"... tastes like paint thinner but works like a charm. You gargle it and try not to barf

I was just remembering lately... I think my mom used to tell me to gargle with a combo of salt and baking soda? ...or was it peroxide and baking soda?...
Cuz I get nasty infections on my tonsils from this, and one just settled in.

Anyone know?

I'm pretty sure peroxide and bakingsoda would be very bad together.... I think it might explode
but... chemistry was 10 years ago in college so I could be wrong.

Horehound candies are awesome. Ricola herbal cough drops work really well. Normally, I would be seconding the water/lemon/honey remedy, but it works best with raw honey, which is not good for baby in vitro or up to like five years old.

Also, garlic. And stay away from soda and coffee (high in acid, bad for sickness).

It reallly helped for me to keep my throat moist. lots of hot tea w/ honey and lemon, ricola honey lemon throat lozenges, and the gargling does work!

oh and I don't know if you want to take any medicines, but Chloraseptic spray is approved for pregnancy...

Thanks Mamas! I'll be sending hubby to the grocery store after work today to pick up some of your great suggestions. My sore throat has subsided some, but now my nose is running like a faucet!

I saw my naturopath/mw Wednesday and she suggested the salt water gargle and a neti pot. I'm sure staying away from sugar would also make a huge difference on the mucus factor, but I'm ashamed to say several times I've resorted to hot chocolate
... it just feels sooooooo good!

Ahh yes, the neti pot. I actually have one and have used it before when sick. Unfortunately, my nose is so stuffed up now that when I try and drain the water into one nostril, it doesn't come out the other side! I'll keep trying because it worked well before...oh well

I'm really sick too and I've been taking hot water, lemon and honey concoctions for two days. I've tried these two things, but not sure if I should be taking them
:

Boericke & Tafel cough and brocnchial syrup and Sambucol

I guess I should have consulted my OB, but I was sick over the weekend. Any thoughts?

Hey All,

So after a continuous week of super runny/congested nose I decided to go get acupuncture to see if it would help any. I went on Friday (was already starting to feel a little better Thursday night) and got acupuncture and cupping. She also gave me Bi Yan Pian to help with sinus congestion as well. There were a couple acupuncture points on the top of my head that were very sensitive and she said they were connected to the sinuses. The cupping was an interesting experience...pretty cool. Anyway, feeling much better now!
I can breath through my nose again, thank god! Thanks again for all your advice!

What is cupping? I haven't heard of it.
Glad to hear you're feeling better! I had acupuncture done once and it was a really bad experience for me
I'm still interested in it though.
