Yeah the things that piss me off regularly about american circ articles are:

1) always listing the myths as "benefits" and then just saying anti-circumcision groups disagree and not WHY

2) never talking about the sensation issue

But its still cool that the article is everywhere and takes a fairly anti-circumcision stance. (plus spreads the word that we are almost 50/50)

I just saw that on yahoo and was going to post it.

The article wasn't too bad until I got to the part where it said:

"Many doctors still recommend circumcision because of some evidence that it reduces the risk of penile cancer, urinary tract infections, HIV and perhaps other sexual transmitted diseases. Many major insurance companies still cover it, and many hospitals offer it free for newborns.."

It'll at least help with the "locker room" argument if nothing else
And obviously, many of the boys who are being left intact must have circumcised fathers so this article would probably help with the "look like daddy" reason as well

Yea, yea and Yea! As with PP, I hate that they are using the flawed Africa study (when will that finally get publicly discredited?) but overall, see this as a win.

Words like "unnecessary, immoral, not consensual" and phrases like "funny attitudes" (regarding masturbation prevention) and "Victorian" certainly help drive the point home that it just isn't necessary.

I'm actually surprised this article made it in the mainstream press....two enthusiastic

I don't know, it seems like they attribute most of the drop in circ rates to immigration. I could see rabidly anti-immigration folks thinking that circ is the American thing to do, to keep "us" separated from "them". Maybe I'm just tired of the B.S. and crabby today!

Since when do hospitals offer circs for free?

I noticed on the MSNBC version that the attached photo shows two very happy, smiling circumcised boys. I'm not saying the boys should NOT be happy (of course not, please don't think that)...I'm just saying that it might be a little subliminal message of "see...circumcision isn't so bad...my boys are cut and look how happy they are"

You are right. I've heard this from people who circ, that the only reason the rates are going down is because of those nasty stupid immigrants

They mentioned it briefly in the scrolling footer on our local cable news channel. It just mentioned that nationwide circ rates are dropping due to immigration and attitude shifts, no accompanying news story.

Hrumph. My people have been here for 400 years. Do I still count as one of the filthy immigrants?

I just realized, I have been doing nothing intactivist for the growing Hispanic population in our community. The last thing we need is anyone feeling like they ought to start foreskin-whacking to assimilate. There are Spanish brochures, pages to print, right? 10% growth here in the last decade- this needs to be addressed! (It is helpful that I already shop in places I'd leave them
. I don't have to have any Great White Savior complexes; I'm just another masa and nopal buyin' customer. And frequent Mexican coke runs...

I reckon any article read by that many people starting off with headlining circumcision as an "Unkind cut" has to be good stuff...

Edit: Whoops! That was the Herald article, not the CNN one! But the CNN one is headed with a screaming, crying baby clearly not relishing having part of his penis removed and certainly not looking like he's about to drop off to sleep.

So that means despite the "Most Common Surgery" in bold it still tackles the idea of it being something everybody does and the notion that it causes no pain. And it is being read by millions of Americans.

Good stuff, surely?

Now that paints a very different picture (still connects it to immigration but expands on that as well as having an anti-circ ending)
Ugh, I just love it when conservative news media take an article and just lop off the parts they don't want people to read to their own end
