Check out the article that my sister <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/love.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="love">: wrote:<br><br><a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070515.wxlunassisted15/BNStory/lifeFamily/home" target="_blank">DIY Delivery</a><br><br>
She commented to me:<br><div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px;">
<div class="smallfont" style="margin-bottom:2px;">Quote:</div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" width="99%"><tr><td class="alt2" style="border:1px inset;">This article has been radically shortened and heavily edited. Quotes from several interviewees who spoke eloquently on the topic were cut; so were stats on the ever-increasing rates of medical intervention in childbirth. Apparently, my original article painted unassisted childbirth in too glowing a light.<br><br>
Newspaper writing is new to me -- my background is in magazines -- and I am now more aware of its limitations. I regret that this article does not reveal the nuances in the decision to give birth unassisted.<br><br>
The revised article is balanced, however, and does not portray the women who choose unhindered birth as flakes or irresponsible mothers.<br><br>
I'm glad the subject has found a place in Canada's national newspaper.</td>
</tr></table></div>
She did some of her research here in the "describe yourself" thread. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/rocks.jpg" style="border:0px solid;" title="mdc rocks">

Thanks for the story!<br><br>
It didn't paint such a bad portrait of UC. It was scary that they tried to get that woman in trouble who wanted a UC with no midwife attending. That is why I didn't tell any MD's my plans either.<br><br>
Sometimes I wonder how 'good' some medical intervention is. I know that medicine does have its place, but with my sister in law, I think that when she went in because her baby was trying to come too early (like 24 weeks) and they did an amnio on her, then she went into labor and delivered prematurely and the baby died. I think that maybe in that case medical intervention with the amnio was not a good thing, at least in her case, and this was done at a womens hospital too.

Is she considering publishing the full article elsewhere? I'd love to read the rest of it. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

Considering how heavily edited it was, that turned out pretty good for a national mainstream paper like the G&M eh? <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin"><br><br>
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to read the full article too and see all the stats she had etc. Too bad that part got edited out. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad"><br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/love.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="love">

It was an interesting article, though I'd love to read the full one without editing. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><br><br>
Also, some of the site comments about the article are pretty "interesting" <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/irked.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="irked">:

Sorry, she can't post the unedited version due to copyright issues and agreements with her employer. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/shrug.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="shrug">
