I just got my period for the first time since I got pregnant with DS (22 months ago!)

It came back with a vengeance. I had a horrible migraine last night, which completely debilitated me. DH was home, so he took care of DS.

I didn't realize it was a migraine at first, just thought it was a bad headache. Me turning off all the lights should have clued me in!

I spent a few hours lying down in agony and eventually I smoked MJ, which has always cured my migraines. I took 4 200mg IBuprofen pills at the same time. About 30 min later, I felt better. I drank some chamomile tea and ate some toast.

I am worried that the next time this happens, DH will be at work. I can't just smoke and curl up in bed and ignore DS (who is 13 months now).

I know a lot of women get migraines during their periods, is there any preventative I can do for this?

Any advice would be great!

Sorry you are having this... migraines are NO fun.

Here are some things that come to mind when thinking natural remedies for migraines...

* Biofeedback and relaxation therapy
* Hypnosis - never tried it, but some swear by it - you can get tapes.
* Chiropractic manipulation - works wonders for some.
* Homeopathy
* Acupuncture - find a good TCM practitioner in your area.
* Massage - especially reflexology - get a good book at the library.)
* Aromatherapy (Rosemary & Lavender inhaled only, not applied)

Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you soon.

I just ran across this article, it basically says that migraines (moreso those with aura than without) often co-exist with a couple genes that mean that person requires extra folate (not folic acid, folate) for proper health/detoxification. Sometimes a couple other B vitamins are used in higher doses than usual along with the folate (Folapro is one brand of folate supp) and the topic may be worth reading about more. There are certain health issues that often go along with this (since it's genetic, it runs in families), or sometimes prenatal testing would cover this, since it's helpful/important to know before TTC.

Best of luck finding something that works! That sounds really not fun.

eta: whoops, here's the actual link (it references other studies on the topic as well at the bottom--the bottom may be most helpful if you don't want to read it all)...

Smoking MJ is bad while you are breastfeeding. THC is stored in your fat for weeks to months and is concentrated in breastmilk. It is one of the few drugs that is contraindicated for breastfeeding. Taking migraine medicine would be better.

I take Topamax for migraine prevention. I have to take 4 other drugs because I have hard to control migraines and I also get wierd migraines, basilar and ocular. The other medication that I think is most important for prevention is Gabapentin. To get migraines under control may take seeing a neurologist.

Of course it's best to be able to not take any medicine while breastfeeding. Some of us have conditions that must be treated. I have been on over 10 medications while breastfeeding and the doctors knew I was breastfeeding.

Migraines suck. Hope you are able to get yours under control.
