Dh's cousin is throwing us a baby shower on the 18th, as we are moving away sometime this summer and dh's family still wanted to give us one. I had some trouble creating the registry, as it's still so early and I was trying to think of things that we needed but weren't too "crazy hippy" and weren't too big, as we have to move this stuff across the continent.

Today the hostess called me and asked me if there were any other "big ticket" items (like a stroller or bedding) that I hadn't put on the registry. Apparently someone is looking to spend some moolah but doesn't want to buy the $117 diaper set I had put on there. I also put a $90 Ellaroo wrap on there. Not expensive enough or just too weird? I told her we were trying to avoid big stuff but I would try to think of something small that's expensive.

So any ideas? The only expensive things I really need/want are all the diapers and a rocking chair (which I was going to register for when my family throws a party for us later). We'll need a carseat, but I was going to wait on that too.

Dh and I want to get a digital camcorder before the baby's born, but we thought we'd wait because they are more expensive in Canada. That would be something 3 or 4 (or 5) people would have to go in on, though. And I'm also not sure it's "baby shower" appropriate.

So should I emphasize the need for diapers (I'm assuming people either don't want to shop online or just don't get the idea of cloth diapers) or should I mention the camcorder? I'm stuck here. Ideas please!

Hmmm, maybe some people just don't like to shop online.

The only thing I can think of is what we did when we got married. Our wedding was in Kansas (home state) but we lived in Idaho (grad school) at the time. Lots of folks gave us presents from our registry while we in Kansas. We took many of the presents back to the store in Kansas, then bought the same thing in Idaho, so we didn't have to move all of that stuff. Wonder if that would work with a car seat. Since you're moving from one country to another, it's a little more complicated.

Gosh I don't know!! I think people like to buy baby gifts in general so maybe just put all of your wants and desires on a list and they can decide to buy or not. I would definitely keep telling them what is important to you and your family and maybe they will get it! AND...If you are OK with buying some stuff yourselves (maybe the camcorder) then I wouldn't worry about what you put down...you could buy what you have left over later on! I know that my in-laws wanted to know about the big stuff (camcorder, rocking chair, stroller, carseat...)
On a side note: We registered (w/#1) for a lot and got hardly anything on the registry. We got tons of stuff but returned a boatload of stuff to the store, but they only give credit...so we bought what we really wanted from that store.
You can always take it back

Do you need a breast pump? Those are small and can be expensive. I have the medela pump in style.

I am not planning on gettong one of these, but if I had a wealthy
benefactor I might ask for one:
www.ambybaby.com/Home

or this:
http://www.jacksmagicbeanstalk.com/p...y-Bed/563,2_40

Though I guess both of these items are kind of big and could be construed as hippy!

Too bad whoever it is doesn't want to spring 4 the diapers or the ellaroo wrap. I wonder if they would feel any better about paying for a few months of diaper service:
www.diapernet.com

I wonder if to people who have it in their heads that sposies and strollers are the way to go, the more natural items you've selected seem too expensive, if that makes sense.

If this all seems too out there, I agree with pp about adding the car seat and the camera, then returning the car seat if need be so you don't have to move it. When we bought a washer at Sears before we moved to a different state we just arranged to have it delivered there, which they were able to do. Though arrangements like this are probably harder to wrok out if someone else is buying things for you. i would check the return policy where you register.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I did mention the camcorder and said I needed a nice diaper bag. I might go for the breast pump idea too, although I wasn't planning on getting one unless the need arose.

I'm starting to think that my preferences will be largely ignored and I'll get a diaper genie, a snugli, and a bottle warmer instead of my cloth diapers and ellaroo. I guess as long as there are gift receipts I'm happy. :LOL

Have you thought of starting a registry at the Baby Super Safety Store?? I see you're in Toronto and they have a location in Toronto, Mississauga, Bramptom and I think North York. They've got lots of really neat stuff at that store, that's where my aunt bought my arms reach co-sleeper (a big ticket item that folds very compact for travel) They also have things like wipe warmers and regular diaper pails, bearview mirrors, baby bjorn, bumbo seats, etc, etc. They have a great website too.
Also if they just don't want to shop on line, there is a brick and mortor store in Toronto that sells cloth diapers called Diaper-Ezz (she's got a website too)

The safety store just started doing registeries, if they'd had one available while I was pregnant I could have spent a whole lot of other peoples money there
