Natural birth in north Charlotte/Lake Norman area?

Hi everyone,

I'm a new mother-to-be and new to the site, so forgive me if this has been brought up many times before.

I'm moving back to the Lake Norman/north Charlotte area in 2 weeks and need to find a caregiver for the last bit of prenatal care and the birth.

I had a natural birth-minded dr/midwife team set up but the midwife has decided to stop taking new patients and I was not an official patient yet. I can still see the doctor, but I really liked the idea of having a midwife. (Dr. Peacock, if anyone has any experience with him..)
So, now I am trying to find someone!
I will be applying for medicaid as soon as I arrive, so this will limit my choices since only some of the hospitals accept medicaid patients.

I have searched midwives in the area and only found who I was planning to see originally. Or I have heard about good midwives and doctors in south Charlotte but I'm worried about the distance.

As of today I am in the 3rd trimester, so it's quite an inconvenient time to learn that my plan must change!

Thank you for any advice and recommendations!

There are midwives at Lake Norman Regional, but I have heard they are quite Medical. Dr. Peacock may be your best bet above the radar. There are HB midwives in the area they are totally non-integrated.

Also don't bother with S. CLT. Those midwives don't work weekends and EVERYONE I know who sees them actually ends up delivering with an OB. And there are like 14 in the practice. They are an okay option if you are right there, but not worth traveling for, IMHO.

Also IDK how far you are from Hickory but there are three midwives up there who are about on par with the S. CLT or LKN midwives, however, Hickory in general is slightly less medically mainstream than CLT.
Just found this!

The 2007, "Method of Delivery" records, by hospital were just posted elsewhere!

Total C-section rate for 2007
NC Total 32.2%
Lake Norman 37.5%
Presby-Huntersville 32.9%

CMC-Pineville 32.5%
CMC-Main 31.4% (lower than the state average)
Presby- Main 38% (18% higher than the state average!!)

CMC-University 38.4% (19% higher than the state average!!)
Presby-Matthews 34% (higher than the state average)
CMC-Union County 25.8% (20% lower than the state average.)

Best chance of a vaginal first birth is at
CMC-Union County 87.8% of all births are vaginal, much higher than the state average.
CMC-Main 82.7%
CMC-Pineville 81.9%

Worst chance of a vaginal first birth is at

Presby-Main 77.3% of all births are vaginal, much lower than the state average.
CMC-University 78%

Best chance of a VBAC is at
CMC-Main 2.5%
CMC-Pineville 1.6%
CMC-University 1.5%

Most chance of a repeat C-section is at
Lake Norman 16.6% of all births
CMC-University 14.9% of all births
Presby-Main 14.2% of all births

Least chance of a repeat C-section is at

CMC-Main-11.7%
CMC-Pineville- 12.7%
CMC-Union Co. 12.9%
Presby-Huntersville 12.9%

I'm trying to get a link to the source document. But, this is astounding. I'm shocked that I was able to birth vaginally at Presby.

There are 5 CNMS w/ Piedmont GYN/OB now (delivering at CMC-Pineville). When I gave birth in late 2007 they only had 3 and did not cover the weekends (and since I gave birth on a Friday night, I did end up w/ a OB), but now that they have 5 CNMS I think they do have weekend coverage.

It is so weird that some doctors can be on call all the time (like Marcia & Dr. Peacock) but as soon as you get a bunch of doctor/midwives in a practice suddenly no one is available!

I hope they do have weekend coverage now. I really thought it was lame city that they didn't have it before.

Oh and Marcia is no longer w/ Dr. Peacock.
(well at least on the way out and not taking new patients, she may still be 'around' for some patients but she is either gone or on the way out).

I'm not too terribly worried about the midwife coverage at CMC-Pineville anymore. By the time I am pregnant again, hopefully the new Birth Center in Fort Mill will be open for business. It's supposed to be about 10 minutes away from CMC-Pineville and entirely midwife-run, w/ facilities for waterbirthing and everything. (www.carolinabirth.org) Much better than the hospital, I hope.
