At my daughters preschool there is an occasional problem with a local cat using the sandbox... well, like a sandbox. This is sand our kids play in, so we don't care for that. And we obviously don't want to put anything toxic or excessively nasty out there. Anyone have a good cat-be-gone trick?

The best remedy is a cover/lid on the box. The cats probably use it at night and the PS are long gone by then, so someone just needs to be diligent about putting it on and taking if off everyday.

There is one sand are that is covered when not in use. But this is another one under a complex piece of equiptment that would be really impractical to try to cover.

Cats don't like powdered ginger. Try sprinkling some of that in there and see if it keeps them away! Good Luck! Laura

I use dried up citrus peels and have had fairly good sucess.

I know a preschool that uses orange construction plastic net fencing to cover their large sandbox and it works great, so you don't need a solid one peice cover at all, just something to annoy the cats.

I second the orange/lemon peels. I have been using them to keep my cat away from my veggies and so far it has worked.

Thank you all for the responses! I spoke with teh Pres of the Co-op yesterday and she says fine... if I am willing to make the effort to do it, no problem. One of the reasons they aren't making a big effort and don't want to buy anything to cover it is that they are hoping to get funds to convert the surface to that rubberized stuff this year. They are willing to rake it clean til then, but heck, if we can do better than that... why not, right?
