As an infant, if ds got congested, breast milk in his nose would clear it up wonderfully (seriously!) But now that he is a toddler, it doesn't really work anymore, I'm not sure why, maybe my milk has changed? Anyway, when he gets a cold, he gets pretty bad congestion that lasts awhile, even after he is feeling fine.

I broke down one time and tried OTC decongestant, and not only didn't it work at all, but it hyped him up. Plus, I just hate giving him that stuff.

Are there any home remedies, homeopathic or herbal solutions? Any ideas/suggestions at all? Thanks!

I've recently discovered a nose spray called "Sinusol." It's homeopathic--you'd have to check and see if it's okay to use on a toddler, but I think it's great stuff. Google for "sinusol" and you'll find a few places that carry it.

You could also try a saline nasal spray--or make your own (without preservatives that way.)

It has sticta, kali bi 15x, Echinacea,Verbascum,, ginseng, salvia, gaultheria 3x,and alcohol 15% It seems to be helping, I haven't wiped her nose as much this afternoon as I did yesterday.

Hi. I'm bumping this thread b/c I'm in the same boat w/ my 4.5-month old ds. He came down with his first cold a few weeks ago shortly followed by his first (double!) ear infection that, on ped's advice, we treated w/ a 10-day course of amoxicillin that, of course, caused him to "bloom" out in a lovely head-to-toe rash that took another two days to clear up.
:

Lo and behold, last Friday (one week ago today), he started coming down with *another* cold. To avoid *another* ear infection we began giving him infant's Dimetapp decongestant once every 6 hours day before yesterday when the cold seemed to peak and he sounded like he was drowning in snew. Last night really sucked though. If he wasn't nursing, he was crying so neither of us got a wink of sleep. He's running a low temp today so we're about to go back to the ped to make sure he doesn't have another ear infection, but... there HAS to be a better way!!

*hoping someone who missed this thread before and has other suggestions will see it now*

PS - breast milk up the nose? and I saw someone else say they put it in their child's ear? no offense, but... does that really work??

ETA: I've kept him propped up as much as possible and even had him sleeping on a foam wedge to help his sinuses drain. Thanks.

my son also has a cold right now.
I have always used eucalyptus essential oil for his congestion. It seems to work okay. I either diffuse a couple of drops in the oil burner (in water of course) or Ill just put a couple of drops on a clean face cloth and just lay it by him when hes sleeping.
Im also giving him Boiron's Coryzalia which is a homeopathic combination for nasal congestion and runny nose.
Taking him outside also seems to help his nose to run.
To me runny is a good sign of draining!
By the way I think we had the exact same night last night Roon. Except my son is also teething! Poor little fellow.
