Mineral oil and frequent cleaning. It's worked for me several times but the stray that we found two years ago had them sooo bad that we had to take him to the vet for a prescription.

I use witch hazel.
Use it for me and the cats (not in my ears of course) but for herpes outbreaks and general face freshening
