I'm trying to get rid of the chemicals in our house one by one. What I'm stuck on right now is shaving cream (for DH). The one he usually uses is full of crap AND in a non-recyclable can. It also has eaten away the enamel covering of the shelf he keeps it on (gross!).

I got him a tube of Avalon moisturizing cream shave, but this morning he came out and told me to go to the store and buy him some real shaving cream cause this stuff was like shaving dry. Is there a mainstream shaving cream that is better than others? Or all they all about the same? Is there a natural one that could pass? He won't use shave soap, and thinks my switching our products is silly anyway, so while he indulges me most of the time, it's not because he agrees with me.

I have yet to find a natural one that my DH will use. I even got him a brush but he still says it's not enough lather. I've just given up and he keeps getting his Foamy.

Here's a link to shaving cream at Skin Deep, you can see if there is one with less ingredients in it that is still in a can. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/bro...m%20(men's)

Would you DH use an electric razor??

We use Kiss My Face shaving cream. It does not get foamy but it is very slick. My husband has very sensitive skin and was a little worried when he did not see foam. Used it once and loved it. He will never go back. He said the Kiss My Face is slicker then foam and much more gentle on his face.

DH uses this one and says it's pretty good:
http://www.drugstore.com/products/pr...80&catid=33678
I'm not exactly sure how natural it is, but we buy it at Whole Foods.

I like Kiss My Face, too- but there are parabens in it.

I use coconut oil to shave...it takes a little getting used to but I never get any irritation or razor burn and no need to use any lotion afterwards. Goes sooo much further than shaving cream/gel goes as well.

For myself, my DH still uses "regular" cream, I've bought some Trader Joe's cream. It's working really great, and the price was pretty good, I think $3 or so. I also have bought an Alba tube, at $5 on sale, but I haven't used it yet. My DH is all for getting rid of chemicals, but when the more natural cream is around $5 versus the "regular" can at less than $2, he's not wanting to convert. His thinking, and to some extent I agree, is that the amount of time the cream is on your skin is fairly minimal, and that it's more important to buy natural items that are are your skin for a longer period of time - aftershave, lotions, moisturizer, make-up, etc. Maybe getting your DH to switch to natural aftershave, if he doesn't already use one, is an option. My DH, like yours, doesn't say too much about the switching of products that I've been doing, his only requirement is that we use up the soaps and things we have first, and that we prioritize what we change over based on length of time on skin and cost. If you find one that works I'm definitely interested. Let us know if you find one your DH will use!
