what can i put on my 5 mo. son's eczema? (i was using elidel sparingly until i read on here about its link to cancer). also, i read somewhere here about me taking flaxseed oil or cod liver oil so it's fatty acids get in my milk for the baby. who's heard of this? which one's better? how much to take? i read on here that's how eczema was taken care of before steroids (taking essential fatty acids). TIA!

We used a homemade salve on ds's severe eczema. We had tried steroids, elidel, and several other prescriptions before I started making my own.
It contains organic olive oil, calendula, chamomile, lavendar, comfrey, chickweed, St. John's Wort, mullein, and plantain and is in a bee's wax base.
I am not sure if it is one of the herbs or a combination that works, but it kepts ds's eczema at bay for 2 years, after which the eczema seemed to go away on it's own.

Hi,

I use calendula soap in water (very diluted) in tepid water, rinse, then aloe, calendula cream and chamomile cream (camocare). On her hands I use aloe then vitamin E oil (the kind you can take internally). I don't put the other stuff on her hands because they're always in her mouth. (DD is 5mo)

On the rest of her body, I do tepid oatmeal baths twice a week washing just the lightly with calendula soap and then use aloe and Burt's Baby Bee moisturizer all over her body (except her face where I use the above stuff.) I use Burt's Baby Bee shampoo bar for her hair during these baths.

This has helped things a lot. I found that using the homeopathic remedies rhus tox and sulpur have helped her a lot as well.

The best thing that helped my son's eczema (besides eliminating the triggers, of course) was just breaking a capsule of evening primrose oil on it, or using a lotion that contained it (Little Forest Moisturizing Baby Lotion has it).

You should also be taking Evening Primrose oil. It decreases inflammation.

You can see Dr. Mercola's take on it at http://www.mercola.com/1998/archive/eczema.htm

I was going to write this post, except our salve excludes chamomile. WEIRD.
We use it for EVERYTHING, and it truly is better on the eczema than elidel and the other steroid creams we were using on the kids.

The information that I have received from my allergist is that the allergies/sensitivites that cause eczema don't usually go away (unless you actively work to heal their root cause, of course).

They just change their expression. I've known a few kids who had eczema, and then after a certain age they stop getting eczema - and get hives instead, or get hyper, or have attention issues, or bowel issues, depression, asthma, etc.

In addition to my cutting out dairy, soy, and peanuts, and anything with a perfume (which helped eliminate 95% of the issue my baby has) I use a cream made by Eclectic called Calendula, Comfrey and Coneflower cream, a.k.a CCC cream. It works nicely. But, the biggest help has be getting rid of foods that cause the problem. Skin is a good indicator of what is going on inside of our bodies.

See the Mercola website for info about fatty acids and eczema. You can find one blurb on it at http://www.mercola.com/2003/may/28/eczema.htm

Both of my kids had baaad eczema; the kind that they will scratch till it gets juicy and bloody. My approach to control the eczema was to find out what to avoid. The list of food that they react are quite long: Apples, apricots, all berries, banana, cuce, pickles, grapes, raisens, nectarinr, orange, peach, tomato, plum, prune, coloring, preservatives, cane sugar, beets sugar, honey, cocoa, wheat, gluten, eggs and yeast. These are foods that contains Salicylate and Tyraine. I used the lists of guide line from Mothering Magazine and some web site. Then, avoid dairy and hydrogenized oil. We eat a little of lean red meat. Then, drink filtered water with fresh lemon juice, green juice (both for detoxification purpose), omega fatty oil (we take flax seed oil in the morning, and cod liver oil in the evening--with a mouth full of fruits after to clense the pallets), probiotic and zinc mixed in soy, almond or rice milk. We are also under the care of homeopath.

We have a really long list of triggers for our eczema gal, but even when we avoid the triggers, she's still bad. I make an herbal ointment for her too, but I only put in calendula and comfrey (sometimes chamomile and plantain too.) Olive oil with beeswax. I give her chamomile or catnip internally to calm her down when she's having a hard time, and oatmeal baths really help too.

Anyway, big discovery that has helped our gal ALOT- borage seed oil. DH read a study about fatty acids, and apparently, fish oil is supposed to be best, but fish is on our list of allergies. Borage oil is second best. We're seeing HUGE differences since we started using it this past week- putting it in the ointment and giving it internally.

Of course, we just discovered that pineapple trigger her, so great. We're back to itchy for a couple days here.

Good luck!

:
Almost exactly the same but jojoba oil instead and no comfrey. Make sure you keep in the fridge too as chickweed is a really wet plant

We have a lady here who makes awesome salves as I usually lack the energy/knowledge.

To Greencat and RiceMomma,

I would really urge both of you to heal your children's guts, and eliminate all of your kiddos' allergies/sensitivities.

Check out www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info. That will help with a diet that will rid your children's bodies of yeast overgrowth, and allow the gut to heal. The inflamed intestines and yeast overgrowth are causing the allergies/sensitivities in the first place.

Then, eliminate the body's "memory" of the allergies/sensitivities with NAET.

You'll be able to expand your children's diets, and stop them from creating new allergies/sensitvities.

Also, find a good naturopathic doctor who's familiar with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and NAET, and who will also recommend some supplements to help with healing the children's guts.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're going to be on a continuous cycle of your kids available choices being continually decreased, and your lives just getting harder and harder.

And please, if you have vaccinated, then please please please stop. Eczema is one of the warning signs for later neurological disorders.

Vaccines are immune suppressors, and eczema is a sign of immune suppression. You need to heal this now, before it goes any further!

BBB- Thanks for the advice. It's hard right now for me to find a good health care provider. We were seeing a chiro- a freind- (DH is very much not interested in that avenue, as well)- and he told us to take her off dairy, and as a result, she became allergic to soy. The techniques he was using on her did not help, and that didn't help DH become open-minded about chiros. We are moving soon, hopefully, and I'll restart my search for someone who can help her.

We've stopped vaxing. She started getting really bad right after her 1 year vax. How sad that I never even questioned vaxing until something happened.

RiceMomma,

Don't beat yourself up for not understanding the harm that vaccines can do - just be proud that you had the wisdom to understand that it was hurting your child and stopped! Unfortunately, not many mommas understand it until it's far more late and there is far more damage.

You probably saved your child from much more serious neurological damage by stopping when you did.

After you move, you might consider seeking out a naturopath who understands the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and NAET. You can read about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet at www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info, and reading the book. It's really an eye-opener, and will quickly give you much more insight into what's going on and how to heal it.

If you can't find a naturopath, or you dh isn't comfortable with that, then you might look up to see if there's DAN doctor in your new location. They would likely understand SCD, and hopefully NAET as well.

You can check for a DAN doctor near you at http://www.autismwebsite.com/ari-lists/danus.html

Wow, thanks for the info, BBB.

And I'm not beating myself up, but I am angry and frustrated with the whole attitude towards vaxing today. That whole do-whatever-my-doctor-tells-me mindset. Not to turn this into a vax thread. And angry at how little doctors can do for my little girl, besides throw steroids and questionable drugs like Elidel and Protopic at her. Well, I could go on and on about how frustrating docs have been, but I'm probably preaching to the chior! I think the area we live in is an alternative health dearth anyway, and I can't wait until we go somewhere else.

Thanks again.
